The Great Salt Plains is a 65-km(2) hypersaline habitat of geological origin located in north-central Oklahoma. Contamination of such ecosystems by petroleum compounds is expected from non-point sources and due to increased human activities. Little information exists about the ability of halophilic and halotolerant bacteria present in such ancient and uncontaminated environments to degrade aromatic hydrocarbons. An enrichment culture was established from soil samples obtained from the salt flats using benzene as the sole carbon and energy source. The enrichment degraded benzene at varied salt concentrations ranging from 0 to 4M. Studies showed that roughly 33% of the (14)C-benzene was converted to (14)CO(2), indicating the mineralization capacity of native bacteria. Bacterial community structure analysis using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis showed that different phylotypes were dominant at different salt concentrations.

The Great Salt Lake (Utah, USA) is reducing in size, which raises several ecological concerns, including the effect of an increasing area of dry playa exposed by the retreating lake. This study focuses solely on concerns about the toxicity of metals in the dust blowing off the playa. Although considerable efforts have been made to understand aeolian dust in urban areas along the Wasatch Front, located just east and south of the Great Salt Lake, there is still a need to consolidate existing research and to conduct a compositional analysis of the dust found in these urban areas.

Interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) employed for seawater desalination and wastewater purification shows great promise to alleviate global freshwater scarcity. However, simultaneous optimization of water transfer direction in a cost-effective and reliable ISSG to balance thermal localization, salt accumulation, and resistance to oilfouling represents a rare feat. Herein, inspired by seabird beaks for unidirectional water transfer, eco-friendly and cost-effective plant extracts, sodium alginate, and tannic acid, are selected for crafting an innovative Sodium Alginate-Tannic Acid Hemispheric Evaporator (STHE).

Ribonucleoprotein (RNP)-based CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing holds great potential for the treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV), which however, is challenged by the lack of efficient cytosolic protein delivery tools. Herein, reversibly-phosphorylated pro-proteins (P-proteins) with conjugated adenosine triphosphate (ATP) tags are engineered and coupled with a membrane-penetrating, guanidine-enriched, α-helical polypeptide (GP) to mediate robust and universal cytosolic delivery. GP forms salt-stable nanocomplexes (NCs) with P-proteins via electrostatic interaction and salt bridging, and the helix-assisted, strong membrane activities of GP enabled efficient cellular internalization and endolysosomal escape of NCs.

Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising technology for mitigating global climate change but suffers from low efficiency, small scale, and high cost due to the dilute atmospheric CO2, limited size of air contactors, and heat-driven CO2 release. Here, we propose combining DAC with widely used industrial cooling towers to extract CO2 from the air and using electrolysis to release the captured CO2 at room temperature. We first prepare a buffered absorbent solution consisting of sodium glycinate, glycine, and sodium chloride for effective CO2 capture from the air, solving the incompatibility problem of the cooling towers with conventional absorbents.

Arene borylation reactions provide direct access to aryl organoboranes, including aryl boronic esters. Precious metals, namely Ir, Rh, Pt, remain the go-to for metal-catalysed borylation reactions, however, significant efforts have been expended in developing Earth-abundant metal alternatives. The iron-catalysed borylation of 2-aryl pyridine derivatives with 9-borabicyclo[3.
