An international interlaboratory study on the determination of ethyl carbamate in alcoholic beverages by a new HPLC-FLD and by the official GC-MS methods is presented. The aim of this study was to improve the knowledge about precision and accuracy parameters of the new method and to compare the performance of both HPLC and GC methods. Five different samples representing table wines, fortified wines (red and white), distilled spirits, and wine spirits were available for analysis by each participant. Despite the low number of participants (6), the results obtained by the laboratories using the HPLC-FLD method are comparable to those obtained by GC-MS methods. The present study emphasizes the possibility to use, as routine, a much simpler analytical method than the current reference method by GC-MS for ethyl carbamate determination in alcoholic beverages.

High-frequency stimulation (HFS)-induced long-term potentiation (LTP) is generally regarded as a homosynaptic Hebbian-type LTP, where synaptic changes are thought to occur at the synapses that project from the stimulation site and terminate onto the neurons at the recording site. In this study, we first investigated HFS-induced LTP on urethane-anesthetized rats and found that cortical HFS enhances neural responses at the recording site through the strengthening of local connectivity with nearby neurons at the stimulation site, rather than through synaptic strengthening at the recording site. This enhanced local connectivity at the stimulation site leads to increased output propagation, resulting in signal potentiation at the recording site.

Direct pacing of the mid myocardium where re-entry originates can be used to prevent ventricular arrhythmias and circumvent the need for painful defibrillation or cardiac ablation. However, there are no pacing electrodes small enough to navigate the coronary veins that cross these culprit scar regions. To address this need, we have developed an injectable ionically conductive hydrogel electrode that can fill the epicardial coronary veins and transform them into flexible electrodes.

Drug repurposing of well-established drugs to be targeted against lung cancer has been a promising strategy. Bosentan is an endothelin 1 (ET-1) blocker widely used in pulmonary hypertension. The current experiment intends to inspect the anticancer and antiangiogenic mechanism of bosentan targeting epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) /extra-cellular Signal Regulated Kinase (ERK) /c-Jun/vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) carcinogenic pathway.

In winemaking, malolactic fermentation (MLF), which converts L-malic acid to L-lactic acid, is often applied after the alcoholic fermentation stage to improve the sensory properties of the wine and its microbiological stability. MLF is usually performed by lactic acid bacteria, which, however, are sensitive to the conditions of alcoholic fermentation. Therefore, the development of wine yeast strains capable of both alcoholic fermentation and MLF is an important task.

This study was conducted to evaluate the material properties of polymer-infiltrated zinc oxide networks (PICN) and the effect of using a phosphate monomer-containing primer applied before polymer infiltration. A total of 148 ZnO-network (zinc oxide) specimens were produced: = 74 were treated with a primer before polymer infiltration and light curing, while the remaining specimens were untreated. Each group was divided into two subgroups ( = 37) based on the infiltrating polymer: UDMA (aliphatic urethane-dimethacrylates)-TEGDMA (triethylene glycol-dimethacrylate) or BisGMA (bisphenol A-glycidyl-methacrylate)-TEGDMA.
