Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism may develop during iodine excess. Hypothyroidism occurs mostly in newborns or in elderly patients with underlying autoimmune thyroiditis and is treated by substitutive doses of thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism is of two types. Type I develops in patients with pretoxic thyroid glands, the radioactive tracer uptake remains high. This type is treated with thionamides and potassium perchlorate, as well as, in some cases, by thyroidectomy or iodine 131. Type II develops in non pretoxic thyroid gland, and it evoluates spontaneously towards euthyroidism, in several months, despite continuation of iodine excess. It responds to glucocorticoid therapy.

Background: Both iodine deficiency and iodine excess can harm the thyroid glands during pregnancy. In areas without iodine fortification, the relationship between the water iodine concentration (WIC) and thyroid disease in pregnant women requires further investigation.
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between water iodine levels and the prevalence of thyroid disease in pregnant women residing in areas with high water iodine levels without access to iodized salt.

Previously published recommendations for vegetarian (including vegan) diets for children have highlighted the need for vitamin B12 supplementation. Increased attention to several other key nutrients (including iodine, vitamin D, calcium, and iron) has also been recommended. However, an overview focusing on supplementation guidelines, specifically for vegan infants, has not been published, and a potential requirement for iodine and/or selenium supplementation in (some) vegan infants has not been discussed.

Purpose: Iodine nutrition during pregnancy plays an important role in fetal development and maternal outcomes. Iodine deficiency has been proved to be associated with maternal thyroid dysfunction, adverse fetal outcomes and neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. At present, there are few studies concentrate on the effects of iodine excess during pregnancy on thyroid function, maternal and neonatal outcomes, and the results are still controversial.

The kinetics of polyamide membrane degradation by free chlorine and halide ions (Br and Cl) were innovatively evaluated based on physicochemical properties and filtration performance, using water/solute permeability coefficient in addition to bromide incorporation as important indicators. The reaction rate constants for the reduced water and HBO permeability coefficient were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher at 0-1 h than 1-10 h. N-bromination and bromination-promoted hydrolysis are dominant degradation mechanisms at 0-1 h (reflected by the breakage of hydrogen bond, the increased Ca binding content, and the increased charge density), and ring-bromination further occurs at 1-10 h (reflected by the disappearance or weakening of aromatic amide band and the nearly constant hydrogen bond).

The hypervalent iodine-mediated formation of steroidal 5/5-spiroiminals and 5/5-spiroaminals from steroidal amines is presented. Under the influence of excess PhI(OAc) and iodine in acetonitrile at 0 °C, steroidal amines smoothly underwent cyclization to give a mixture of 5/5-spiroiminals and 5/5-spiroaminals. This reaction represents the first example of a C-H-activation-mediated formation of a spiroiminal.
