This study explores the vapochromic and vapoluminescent behaviors of [Pt(tpy)Cl]PF host molecules (tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) under acetonitrile (CHCN) vapor guest, challenging the conventional view that these phenomena arise solely from direct host-guest interactions. Our findings reveal a cooperative mechanism where mechanochromic surface perturbations prime the Pt(II) host for guest incorporation, leading to initial color and luminescence changes prior to significant structural alterations. While the color transition between the yellow [Pt(tpy)Cl]PF form and the red/orange [Pt(tpy)Cl]PF·CHCN form is reversible, repeated vapor cycling induces a loss of crystallinity, as indicated by diffraction peak broadening and emission shifts.

Separation of cyclohexanol from cyclohexanol/cyclohexene mixtures by crystals of pillar[6]arene containing three benzoquinone units.

Chem Commun (Camb)

Stoddart Institute of Molecular Science, Department of Chemistry, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310058, P. R. China.

Here, we develop a new absorbent for efficient separation of cyclohexanol (CHA-ol) and cyclohexene (CHA-ene) by using crystals of pillar[6]arene with three benzoquinone units (P3QA). P3QA crystals are found to show remarkable selectivity for CHA-ol in 50 : 50 (v/v) CHA-ol : CHA-ene mixtures with a purity of 95.2%, along with vapochromic behavior.

Article Synopsis
  • A series of nine new soft salts based on platinum(II) complexes were synthesized and showed notable photophysical properties, exhibiting phosphorescence with up to 0.36 PLQY in solid state.
  • Most complexes demonstrated aggregation-induced emission (AIE) or enhancement (AIEE) as the concentration of water increased in solutions.
  • The presence of free nitrogen in these complexes enables sensitivity to acidic vapors that quenches phosphorescence and exhibits reversible vapochromism, making them promising candidates for anti-counterfeiting applications.

Vapochromic separation of toluene and pyridine azeotropes using adaptive macrocycle co-crystals.

Chem Commun (Camb)

July 2024

Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies on Intelligent Molecules, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Structure and Performance for Functional Molecules, College of Chemistry, Tianjin Normal University, Tianjin 300387, P. R. China.

The separation of toluene (Tol) and pyridine (Py) azeotropes is significant in the chemical industry. Herein, we present a new method for the energy-efficient separation of Tol and Py using pillar[5]arene-based adaptive macrocycle co-crystals (MCCs) that can selectively separate Py from a Py/Tol equimolar mixture with 99.2% purity, accompanied by vapochromic behavior from white to yellow.

A novel 3D europium-based cationic framework (Eu-CMOF) has been constructed solvothermally by employing a viologen derivative as an organic functional building unit. Notably, Eu-CMOF demonstrates its capability as a proficient aqueous-phase ion-exchange host, facilitating the remarkable rapid chromatographic column separation of new coccine and malachite green (NC/MG), as well as new coccine and methylene blue (NC/MLB), in mere 2 to 4 min. Adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics of anionic dyes demonstrate that Eu-CMOF exhibits a higher adsorption capacity for NC, as evaluated by the Langmuir model, reaching a value of 173 mg·g.
