Pathophysiological effects of hypoxia on testis function and spermatogenesis.

Nat Rev Urol

January 2025

Discipline of Biological Sciences, College of Engineering, Science and Environment, The University of Newcastle, Callaghan, New South Wales, Australia.

Multiple conditions can cause hypoxia in the testis, including exposure to high altitude, sleep apnoea, testicular torsion and varicocele. Varicocele accounts for up to 44% of instances of primary infertility, but the cumulative contribution of hypoxic conditions to male infertility is undefined. Results of controlled hypobaric hypoxia studies have demonstrated a substantial detrimental effect of short-term and long-term exposures on sperm; however, downstream effects on embryo development and offspring health are less well understood.

Purpose: Our study presents a virtual reality-based tangent screen test (VTS) to measure subjective ocular deviations including torsion in nine directions of gaze. The test was compared to the analogous Harms tangent screen test (HTS).

Methods: We used an Oculus Go controller and head-mounted-display with rotation sensors to measure patient's head orientation for the VTS.

Platelet-rich plasma effects on in vitro cells derived from pediatric patients with andrological diseases.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Neurosciences, Biomedicine and Movement Sciences, Biochemistry Section, University of Verona, Verona, Italy.

Undescended testis and testicular torsion represent two frequent andrological diseases that affect the pediatric age. Despite these testicular disorders having different causes, they both negatively influence fertility in adulthood mainly due to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which represents the primary molecular damage underlying their long-term effects. The gold standard of treatment for both pathologies is surgery; however, it cannot guarantee an optimal fertility outcome in all clinical cases, underscoring the need to identify effective adjuvant therapies that may target the augmented ROS levels.

Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are a common cause of emergency presentation in rabbits. Gastrointestinal stasis is a syndrome that is frequently caused by various primary conditions (including but not limited to affections of the GI tract itself). Over the last years, clinical features, diagnosis, management, and prognosis of GI disorders-such as GI obstructions, appendicitis, rabbit hemorrhagic virus disease, or liver lobe torsion-have been studied.

Virilization, Ovarian Hyperthecosis and Torsion Masquerading as Malignancy: A Case Report.

J Pediatr Adolesc Gynecol

December 2024

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, Cincinnati, OH; University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cincinnati, OH. Electronic address:

Background: Premenopausal females with signs of androgen excess and oligomenorrhea are commonly evaluated for polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or for an androgen-secreting tumor if a pelvic mass is present. Ovarian hyperthecosis (OHT) as a cause of these symptoms in adolescents is rare.

Case: A 15-year-old female with primary amenorrhea and signs of virilization was referred to Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology after pelvic imaging demonstrated a pelvic mass, suspected to be arising from the right ovary, and an adjacent paratubal cyst.
