Aim: To study effect of amiodarone on inotropic reactions of myocardium of patients with ischemic heart disease and rats.

Methods And Results: Excitability of rat myocardium has been found to be higher than that of myocardium of patients. Sarcoplasmic reticulum of myocardium of rats has greater functional reserve, therefore rat muscle preparations respond to extrasystolic stimuli with postextrasystolic potentiation. Perfusion with a solution containing amiodarone caused diminution of amplitude of extrasystolic response of muscular strips both from rats and patients. Amiodarone augmented ability of sarcoplasmic reticulum to accumulate Ca ions as it prevented decrease of postextrasystolic contraction of human myocardium and brought about postextrasystolic potentiation of muscular strips of rat myocardium.

Conclusion: Amiodarone affected intracellular homeostasis of calcium ions in cardiomyocytes of both rats and patients. Amiodarone lowered myocardial excitability and facilitated ability of cardiomyocyte sarcoplasmic reticulum to accumulate calcium ions.

Cardiac amyloidosis: when to suspect and how to confirm.

J Cardiovasc Med (Hagerstown)

February 2025

Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Cardiomyopathies, Cardiovascular Department, Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Giuliano-Isontina (ASUGI), University of Trieste.

Diagnosing cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is challenging because of its phenotypic heterogeneity, multiorgan involvement requiring interaction among experts in different specialties and subspecialties, lack of a single noninvasive diagnostic tool, and still limited awareness in the medical community. Missing or delaying the diagnosis of CA may profoundly impact on patients' outcomes, as potentially life-saving treatments may be omitted or delayed. The suspicion of CA should arise when "red flags" for this condition are present, together with increased left ventricular wall thickness.

Purpose: Spine surgery, particularly deformity correction, is associated with a high risk of peri-operative or post-operative complications, and these complications can lead to catastrophic consequences. This case report will present the etiology and treatment process of the peri-operative cardiac arrest during scoliosis correction surgery.

Method: In this report, we present a case of cardiac arrest during posterior correction surgery in a 17-year-old female patient with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Unlabelled: Myocarditis and pericarditis, or myopericarditis, is a rare, albeit life-threatening, cardiac complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although most patients recover from myocardial inflammation within weeks of the acute infection, there are concerns about acute and long-term myocardial injury. Coronary microvascular dysfunction and myocardial inflammation in the affected myocardium might be key factors in developing acute COVID-19-associated myopericarditis.

Background: The major of anticancer therapies induce a wide spectrum of cardiotoxic effects. Early identification of anticancer treatment-associated cardiotoxicity is critical to informing decisions on subsequent interventions. Myocardial extracellular volume (ECV) has been proposed as a useful parameter for quantifying the early cardiotoxicity of cancer-related treatment.

CaMKIIγ advances chronic intermittent hypoxia-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis via HIF-1 signaling pathway.

January 2025

Nantong Key Laboratory of Translational Medicine in Cardiothoracic Diseases, and Research Institution of Translational Medicine in Cardiothoracic Diseases, Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, Nantong, Jiangsu, 226001, China.

Background: Our previous study have demonstrated chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and cardiac dysfunction. However, the molecular mechanisms are complicated and varied. In this study, we first investigated the CaMKIIγ expression and signaling pathway in the pathogenesis of cardiomyocyte apoptosis after CIH.
