Soil-transmitted parasitic nematodes infect over 1 billion people worldwide and are a common source of neglected disease. Strongyloides stercoralis is a potentially fatal skin-penetrating human parasite that is endemic to tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The complex life cycle of Strongyloides species is unique among human-parasitic nematodes in that it includes a single free-living generation featuring soil-dwelling, bacterivorous adults whose progeny all develop into infective larvae.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a persistent gastrointestinal disease, is featured with impaired gut immunity. Previous studies have demonstrated that tuft cells can regulate the intestinal type 2 immune response by activating downstream ILC2 and Th2 cells and repair gut barrier upon invasion of parasitic helminths, bacteria, protozoans, and enteritis through different chemo-sensing receptors, such as bitter taste receptors. Berberine is a widely used in the treatment of diarrhea in clinic, however the mechanism underlying this effect is not clear.

Thelaziasis in an urban woman in Beijing: a case report and literature review.

BMC Ophthalmol

November 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Beijing Key Laboratory of Restoration of Damaged Ocular Nerve, Peking University Third Hospital, No 49 North Garden Road, Haidian District, Beijing, 100191, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Thelaziasis, caused by the parasitic worm Thelazia callipaeda, leads to various eye-related symptoms, potentially resulting in serious conditions like conjunctivitis or blindness, particularly in areas with contact to domestic animals.
  • A 41-year-old woman experienced persistent eye discomfort attributed to Thelazia callipaeda, despite initial treatments, but underwent successful removal of the worms from her eye.
  • The case emphasizes the need for healthcare professionals to consider parasitic infections in diagnosing eye issues, even in urban settings, and suggests that regional studies on the prevalence of human thelaziasis in China are necessary.

Sensations of the internal state of the body play crucial roles in regulating the physiological processes and maintaining homeostasis of an organism. However, our understanding of how internal signals are sensed, processed, and integrated to generate appropriate biological responses remains limited. Here, we show that the C.

The coffee industry reaches over 80 billion US dollars in revenue partially due to the numerous chemicals that allow for coffee's highly attractive aroma and overall flavor. Many people integrate coffee into their everyday routine; therefore, understanding the attraction to coffee can facilitate, 1) the characterization of its attractive nature, and, 2) allow further understanding of how humans interpret taste and smell on a molecular and cellular level, from initial sensation to higher processing of these complex neural signals. We report that the model worm, , can smell and perform strong attraction behavior using chemotaxis towards various types of coffee odors.
