Published: July 2005

Advances in endovascular technology have enabled the development of complex techniques for the treatment of vascular conditions. Not surprisingly, the modern vascular surgeon will likely encounter unusual complications and will need to formulate plans for their management. In the current case report, the vascular surgery service was consulted to assist in the management of a retained embolization coil in the carotid artery. Relevant aspects of detachable coils are discussed and the successful management of this potentially hazardous complication is described.

The management of traumatic splenic injuries has evolved significantly over the past several decades, with the majority of these injuries now being treated nonoperatively. Patients who exhibit hemodynamic instability upon initial evaluation typically require surgical intervention, while the remainder are managed conservatively. Conservative treatment for traumatic splenic injuries encompasses both medical management and splenic artery angiography, followed by embolization in cases where patients exhibit clinical signs of ongoing splenic hemorrhage.

Objectives: Postpartum haemorrhage is the most common cause of mortality among women after childbirth. Therefore, this work aims to highlight the possibility of endovascular treatment of postpartum haemorrhage due to remnants in patients with placenta accreta spectrum disorders (PAS disorders) using selective UAE after failure of the standard management. This procedure is a relatively safe and technically nondemanding, with a low risk of recurrent vaginal bleeding.

A G5P2+2 woman in her 30s presented to hospital with per vaginum (PV) bleeding, approximately 2 weeks post electric vacuum aspiration (EVA) for retained products of conception. Ultrasound and MRI demonstrated a large vascular myometrial lesion, suggestive of a uterine arteriovenous malformation (UAVM). She underwent digital subtraction angiography (DSA) with interventional radiology and simultaneous uterine artery embolisation (UAE).

Here, we describe two cases of retained products of conception (RPOC) that were successfully managed with hysteroscopic resection after laparoscopic temporary uterine artery ligation. Both patients were diagnosed with RPOC after early miscarriages. Case 1 was urgently admitted due to massive bleeding and underwent surgery following a blood transfusion.
