[Topographic mapping of electric activity of the brain].

Published: March 1992

Quantitated neurophysiology and topographic brain mapping are reviewed. Certain information on the electrical activity of the brain may be more easily comprehended with the aid of topographic visualization of EEG and evoked potentials. Quantitated neurophysiology promises to make an important contribution to research in several fields of neuroscience, e.g. cognitive processing, psychiatry, dementia, epilepsy, cerebrovascular disorders, auditory and visual electrophysiology, and migraine. Provided that careful attention is paid to the elimination of artefacts, such methods may also be used as supplementary diagnostic tools in the clinic.

Artificial Visual System for Stereo-Orientation Recognition Based on Hubel-Wiesel Model.

Biomimetics (Basel)

Stereo-orientation selectivity is a fundamental neural mechanism in the brain that plays a crucial role in perception. However, due to the recognition process of high-dimensional spatial information commonly occurring in high-order cortex, we still know little about the mechanisms underlying stereo-orientation selectivity and lack a modeling strategy. A classical explanation for the mechanism of two-dimensional orientation selectivity within the primary visual cortex is based on the Hubel-Wiesel model, a cascading neural connection structure.

Precision, or personalized, medicine aims to stratify patients based on variable pathogenic signatures to optimize the effectiveness of disease prevention and treatment. This approach is favorable in the context of brain disorders, which are often heterogeneous in their pathophysiological features, patterns of disease progression and treatment response, resulting in limited therapeutic standard-of-care. Here we highlight the transformative role that human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived neural models are poised to play in advancing precision medicine for brain disorders, particularly emerging innovations that improve the relevance of hiPSC models to human physiology.

The increasing recreational use of ecstasy (MDMA) poses significant risks to human health, including reports of fatal renal failure due to its adverse renal effects. While MDMA-induced renal toxicity might result from systemic effects, there is also substantial evidence of direct harm to renal tissues by MDMA or its metabolites. The precise mechanisms underlying renal toxicity remain unclear.

Background: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating condition characterised by significant heterogeneity. Early diagnosis is critical, but limited data exists on the condition's early stages. This study aimed to characterise (very) early CRPS patients and explore potential subgroups to enhance understanding of its mechanisms.
