Phototrophy, the conversion of light to biochemical energy, occurs throughout the Bacteria and plants, however, debate continues over how different phototrophic mechanisms and the bacteria that contain them are related. There are two types of phototrophic mechanisms in the Bacteria: reaction center type 1 (RC1) has core and core antenna domains that are parts of a single polypeptide, whereas reaction center type 2 (RC2) is composed of short core proteins without antenna domains. In cyanobacteria, RC2 is associated with separate core antenna proteins that are homologous to the core antenna domains of RC1. We reconstructed evolutionary relationships among phototrophic mechanisms based on a phylogeny of core antenna domains/proteins. Core antenna domains of 46 polypeptides were aligned, including the RC1 core proteins of heliobacteria, green sulfur bacteria, and photosystem I (PSI) of cyanobacteria and plastids, plus core antenna proteins of photosystem II (PSII) from cyanobacteria and plastids. Maximum likelihood, parsimony, and neighbor joining methods all supported a single phylogeny in which PSII core antenna proteins (PsbC, PsbB) arose within the cyanobacteria from duplications of the RC1-associated core antenna domains and accessory antenna proteins (IsiA, PcbA, PcbC) arose from duplications of PsbB. The data indicate an evolutionary history of RC1 in which an initially homodimeric reaction center was vertically transmitted to green sulfur bacteria, heliobacteria, and an ancestor of cyanobacteria. A heterodimeric RC1 (=PSI) then arose within the cyanobacterial lineage. In this scenario, the current diversity of core antenna domains/proteins is explained without a need to invoke horizontal transfer.

Background: Odorant binding proteins (OBPs) initiate the process of odorant perception. Numerous investigations have demonstrated that OBPs bind a broad variety of chemicals and are more likely to carry pheromones or odor molecules with high binding affinities. However, few studies have investigated its effects on insect behavior.

The development of narrowband emissive, bright, and stable solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (SP-OLEDs) remains a challenge. Here, a strategy is presented that merges within a single emitter a TADF sensitizer responsible for exciton harvesting and an MR-TADF motif that provides bright and narrowband emission. This emitter design also shows strong resistance to aggregate formation and aggregation-cause quenching.

A core dielectric cylindrical rod wrapped in a dielectric circular pipe whose outer surface is enclosed by a helical conducting strip grating that is skewed along the axial direction is herein analyzed using the asymptotic strip boundary conditions along with classical vector potential analysis. Targeted for use as a cylindrical holographic antenna, the resultant field solutions facilitate the aperture integration of the equivalent cylindrical surface currents to obtain the radiated far fields. As each rod section of a certain skew angle exhibits a distinct modal attribute; this topology allows for the distribution of the cylindrical surface impedance via the effective refractive index to be modulated, as in gradient-index (GRIN) materials.

The excessive presence of the metal ions Cu and Fe in the environment poses a serious threat to ecosystems and human health, so timely and accurate detection of them has become essential and urgent. In this paper, a novel hydrogel-based fluorescent sensor, named ME-IPA@SA-TbZn, was fabricated facilely through an in-situ cross-linking modification method and was used for the detection of Cu and Fe in water bodies. The ME-IPA@SA-TbZn is essentially a hybrid hydrogel bead that exhibits vibrant fluorescence, employing Tb and Zn functionalized hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) as the fluorescence functional core and sodium alginate (SA) as the hydrogel matrix.

Purple phototrophic bacteria produce two kinds of light-harvesting complexes that function to capture and transmit solar energy: the core antenna (LH1) and the peripheral antenna (LH2). The apoproteins of these antennas, encoded respectively by the genes pufBA and pucBA within and outside the photosynthetic gene cluster, respectively, exhibit conserved amino acid sequences and structural topologies suggesting they were derived from a shared ancestor. Here we present the structures of two photosynthetic complexes from Roseospirillum (Rss.
