The water dispersibility of a hydrophobic carotenoid has been greatly enhanced by using it as the acyl part in the synthesis of a highly unsaturated lysophospholipid. Dynamic light scattering has revealed the formation of stable aggregates with an average hydrodynamic radius of a few nanometers, and absorption spectra show that the aggregates can withstand the addition of ethanol or acetonitrile until the volume fraction of water falls below 70 and 62%, respectively. The properties of the carotenoid phospholipids have been characterized by determining surface tension, critical micelle concentration, surface concentration, molecular area, free energy of adsorption and micellation, adsorption-micellar energy relationship, and equilibrium constants.

SR21, a kind of eukaryotic heterotrophic organism rich in unsaturated fatty acids, is an emerging microbial alternative to fish oil. The dietary inclusion of 15% SR21 was optimal for the growth performance of zebrafish. Previous studies demonstrated that fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase (FBA) of is a valuable broad-spectrum antigen against various pathogens in aquaculture (e.

Lipids are indispensable components of living organisms and play pivotal roles in cell-membrane fluidity, energy provision, and neurotransmitter transmission and transport. Lipids can act as potential biomarkers of diseases given their abilities to indicate cell-growth status. For example, the lipid-metabolism processes of cancer cells are distinct from those of normal cells owing to their rapid proliferation and adaptation to ever-changing biological environments.

Hydroalkylation of terminal alkynes is a powerful approach to the synthesis of disubstituted alkenes. However, its application is largely unexplored in the synthesis of α,β-unsaturated carbonyls, which are common among synthetic intermediates and biologically active molecules. The thermodynamically less stable -isomers of activated alkenes have been particularly challenging to access because of their propensity for isomerization and the paucity of reliable -selective hydroalkylation methods.

More than 90% of earth's microbial biomass resides in the continental subsurface, where sedimentary rocks provide the largest source of organic carbon (C). While many studies indicate microbial utilization of fossil C sources, the extent to which rock-organic C is driving microbial activities in aquifers remains largely unknown. Here we incubated oxic and anoxic groundwater with crushed carbonate rocks from the host aquifer and an outcrop rock of the unsaturated zone characterized by higher organic C content, and compared the natural abundance of radiocarbon (C) of available C pools and microbial biomarkers.

Carboncones and fullerenes are exemplary π-conjugated carbon nanomaterials with unsaturated, positively curved surfaces, enabling the attachment of atoms or functional groups to enhance their physicochemical properties. However, predicting and understanding the addition patterns in functionalized carboncones and fullerenes are extremely challenging due to the formidable complexity of the regioselectivity exhibited in the adducts. Existing predictive models fall short in systems where the carbon molecular framework undergoes severe distortion upon high degrees of addition.
