Order-to-chaos transition in rotational nuclei.

Published: February 2005

We have developed a new method to study the order-to-chaos transition in rotational nuclei. Correlations between successive gamma rays are used to determine the average complexity of the intermediate levels and thereby the ratio of the interaction potential between levels to the level spacing. The measured ratios, 0.15 to 1.5, span the range from nearly fully ordered to nearly fully chaotic.

We consider systems of N particles interacting on the unit circle through 2π-periodic potentials. An example is the N-rotor problem that arises as the classical limit of coupled Josephson junctions and for various energies is known to have a wide range of behaviors such as global chaos and ergodicity, together with families of periodic solutions and transitions from order to chaos. We focus here on selected initial values for generalized systems in which the second order Euler-Lagrange equations reduce to first order equations, which we show by example can describe an ensemble of oscillators with associated emergent phenomena such as synchronization.

Eigenlevel correlation diagrams has proven to be a very useful tool to understand eigenstate characteristics of classically chaotic systems. In particular, we showed in a previous publication [Phys. Rev.

We study a damped kicked top dynamics of a large number of qubits (N→∞) and focus on an evolution of a reduced single-qubit subsystem. Each subsystem is subjected to the amplitude damping channel controlled by the damping constant r∈[0,1], which plays the role of the single control parameter. In the parameter range for which the classical dynamics is chaotic, while varying r we find the universal period-doubling behavior characteristic to one-dimensional maps: period-2 dynamics starts at r_{1}≈0.

Computational Power of Asynchronously Tuned Automata Enhancing the Unfolded Edge of Chaos.

Asynchronously tuned elementary cellular automata (AT-ECA) are described with respect to the relationship between active and passive updating, and that spells out the relationship between synchronous and asynchronous updating. Mutual tuning between synchronous and asynchronous updating can be interpreted as the model for dissipative structure, and that can reveal the critical property in the phase transition from order to chaos. Since asynchronous tuning easily makes behavior at the edge of chaos, the property of AT-ECA is called the unfolded edge of chaos.

The brain's efficient information processing is enabled by the interplay between its neuro-synaptic elements and complex network structure. This work reports on the neuromorphic dynamics of nanowire networks (NWNs), a unique brain-inspired system with synapse-like memristive junctions embedded within a recurrent neural network-like structure. Simulation and experiment elucidate how collective memristive switching gives rise to long-range transport pathways, drastically altering the network's global state via a discontinuous phase transition.
