Androgen plays an important role in the developing ovaries of female fish. However, little is known regarding either the sites of production of androgen or its functional roles. In the present study, we investigated immunohistochemically the localization of cholesterol-side-chain-cleavage (P450scc) and cytochrome P45011beta-hydroxylase (P45011beta) with antibodies P450scc and P45011beta in the ovary of the female honeycomb grouper Epinephelus merra during its reproductive cycle. Clusters of strongly immunopositive cells, with 100-1000 cells in each cluster, against both P450scc and P45011beta, were observed throughout the annual reproductive cycle in tissue near blood vessels in the tunica ovary surrounding the outer periphery of the ovary. The ultrastructural characteristics of these cells showed that they were steroid-producing cells. In contrast, immunopositive cells against P450scc but not against P45011beta were localized in the theca layer surrounding the outer periphery of oocytes. These results suggest that two distinct steroid biosynthesis sites exist in the ovary and that cells at the two sites differ functionally. The only cells that biosynthesize 11-ketotestosterone are found in clusters in the vicinity of blood vessels; they possibly play a physiological role in oocyte growth and gonadal restructuring during the sex change of individuals of this species.

Adrenal corticosterone plays crucial roles in energy metabolism and immuno-reactivity throughout the body. As we have previously shown that corticosterone biosynthesis in C2C12 myoblasts, we study about corticosterone biosynthesis in rat skeletal muscles. It was found that enzymatic activities producing corticosterone and testosterone except the activity of P450scc in rat skeletal muscle as like as C2C12 cells.

Autism spectrum disorder is a group of neurodevelopmental disorders with the higher prevalence in males. Our previous studies have indicated lower progesterone levels in the children with autism spectrum disorder, suggesting involvement of the cytochrome P-450scc gene (CYP11A1) and cytochrome P-45011beta gene (CYP11B1) as candidate genes in autism spectrum disorder. The aim of this study was to investigate the family-based genetic association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms, rs2279357 in the CYP11A1 gene and rs4534 and rs4541 in the CYP11B1 gene and autism spectrum disorder in Chinese children, which were selected according to the location in the coding region and 5' and 3' regions and minor allele frequencies of greater than 0.

Soy products, commonly used as a protein source in farm animals' diets, contain considerable quantities of non-nutrient constituents such as phytoestrogens. Genistein and daidzein are known to affect the reproductive processes in humans and animals. However, reports concerning phytoestrogens and porcine adrenal steroidogenesis are scarce, and the adrenal mechanism of phytoestrogen action in species other than humans and rodents is poorly recognized.

The effects of chronic exposure to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) or the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone (DEX) on the expression of genes involved in cortisol synthesis were examined using quantitative RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Juvenile Chinook salmon were treated with either ACTH via micro-osmotic pumps or with DEX via a lipid-based sustained release vehicle. Plasma cortisol levels were significantly elevated in ACTH-treated fish after 1 day, with a significant reduction in this effect with increasing treatment duration.

Few studies have examined functional adrenal zonation throughout human life. Adrenals from 61 surgical/autopsy patients from 1 day old to 92 years old who had no clinical endocrinological/mineralocorticoid abnormalities were assessed for immunohistochemically defined adrenal zonation. The zona glomerulosa (zG) was well developed in all 11 patients ranging in age from newborn to the 30s.
