It is important for prevention of vascular complications in diabetics to control blood glucose, blood pressure, and dyslipidemia, and to stop smoking. Recently, it has been reported that the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor has angiogenetic effects independent of lipid lowering effect. Moreover, gene therapy using VEGF and HGF has shown dramatic effects for peripheral arterial disease. Endothelial progenitor cells injection is also expected for treatment of ischemic heart disease.

Orbital apex lesions represent a clinical challenge since they are difficult to remove surgically and may induce significant functional defects. The orbital apex is an area of convergence of neurovascular elements passing through the various local osseous foramina and the congestion of several critical anatomical structures in a confined space increases the risk of intraoperative complications. Radiotherapy is an alternative treatment option in such cases but may also induce radiation toxicity.

Purpose: To assess the 12-month outcomes in subjects developing macular neovascularization (MNV) during intravitreal avacincaptad pegol (IVA) treatment for geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Methods: This research was conducted as a case-controlled, retrospective study of AMD subjects undergoing IVA treatment for GA from two private practice institutions. Subjects were divided into 1) a Study Group of patients who developed MNV and then underwent anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy during the study period, and 2) a Control Group of patients who were complication-free during the study period.

BACKGROUND The bacterial organism Capnocytophaga canimorsus is an oral commensal of cats and dogs and can cause life-threatening infections like mycotic aneurysm, meningitis, and sepsis. Mycotic aneurysms occur when microbial infections cause arterial wall degeneration. Difficulty in diagnosing Capnocytophaga canimorsus infection can occur due to the bacteria's fastidious nature and laboratory testing limitations, contributing to the infection's high morbidity and mortality.
