Later flow immunochromatographic assay has been widely used in clinical, environmental, and other diagnostic applications owing to its high sensitivity and throughput. However, most immunoassays operate in the "turn-off" mode for detecting targets of low molecular weight. The signal intensity decreases as the analyte concentration increases, which poses a challenge for achieving ultrasensitive detection at low concentrations and is counterintuitive to new users.

Weight loss supplements that have illegal additives of pharmaceutical drugs or analogues have additional health risks, and customers may not be aware of what they are taking. This research is an essential investigation and quantification of illegally added pharmaceuticals or prescription medications, specifically fluoxetine, phenolphthalein, and sibutramine, in herbal weight loss supplements offered for sale in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In this case, 137 weight loss supplements were collected and analyzed in this study.

Sibutramine is cited by the World Anti-Doping Agency as a stimulant. According to the literature, sibutramine is extensively metabolized into N-desmethyl-sibutramine (M1), N-bisdesmethyl-sibutramine (M2) and monohydroxy derivatives of M1 and M2. Therefore, it is important to verify new sibutramine metabolites through current analytical methodologies, such as liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS).

Previous studies have reported on the glucose and lipid-lowering effects of ferulic acid (FA) but its anti-obesity potential has not yet been firmly established. This study investigated the possible anti-obesitogenic effects of FA in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 15 weeks. To assess the antiobesity potential of FA, 32 male Swiss mice, weighing 20-25 g (n=6-8 per group) were fed a normal diet (ND) or HFD, treated orally or not with either FA (10 mg/kg) or sibutramine (10 mg/kg) for 15 weeks and at the end of this period, the body weights of animals, visceral fat accumulation, plasma levels of glucose and insulin hormone, amylase and lipase activities, the satiety hormones ghrelin and leptin, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCH-1) were analyzed.

The long held view is cocaine's pharmacological effects are mediated by monoamine reuptake inhibition. However, drugs with rapid brain penetration like sibutramine, bupropion, mazindol and tesofensine, which are equal to or more potent than cocaine as dopamine reuptake inhibitors, produce no discernable subjective effects such as drug "highs" or euphoria in drug-experienced human volunteers. Moreover they are dysphoric and aversive when given at high doses.
