Background And Objective: The objective of the study is to know the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MS), as well as to know the differences in its prevalence according to the Adult Treatment Panel of the National Cholesterol Education Program (ATP-III) and World Health Organization (WHO) criteria.

Patients And Method: Cross-sectional descriptive study performed in primary care in population of both sexes aged between 40 and 74 years. Variables studied were risk factors as well as each one of the components of MS, according to both definitions.

Results: We studied 358 patients, 161 (45%) men and 197 women. The prevalence of MS using the WHO criteria was 17.9% and according with the ATP-III criteria it was 23.5%. The prevalence increased with age and the body mass index. Both definitions agreed in the classification of MS in 80% of cases (kappa = 0.38). If we considered the definition of MS according to the WHO taken as the "gold standard", the ATP-III definition displays a sensitivity of 59.4%, specificity of 84.4% and negative predictive value of 90.5%. The agreement is greater in women and older than 60 years.

Conclusions: The prevalence of MS is smaller with the WHO criteria. The agreement between both methods is scarce and the clinical application of the ATP-III criteria in primary care needs its homologation with clinic-epidemiological studies.

Although numerous studies have focused on diagnostic biomarkers to help identify allergic rhinitis (AR), data on the characteristics of pediatric AR with different severity is limited. We aimed to compare the characteristics of pediatric AR with different severity. A total of 1054 children with AR were enrolled and classified into mild intermittent AR, mild persistent AR, moderate-to-severe intermittent AR, and moderate-to-severe persistent AR.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent and deadly malignancies worldwide. Recently, ferroptosis, a novel form of regulated cell death characterized by iron dependency and lipid peroxidation, has garnered significant attention from researchers. The mechanisms underlying ferroptosis, including intracellular iron levels, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant system regulation, offer new insights into cancer treatment strategies.

Department of Critical Care Medicine, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, China.

Background: Leukocytes play an important role in inflammatory response after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). We designed this study to identify TBI phenotypes by clustering blood levels of various leukocytes.

Methods: TBI patients from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-III (MIMIC-III) database were included.

Background: Macrophages play a dual role in the tumor microenvironment(TME), capable of secreting pro-inflammatory factors to combat tumors while also promoting tumor growth through angiogenesis and immune suppression. This study aims to explore the characteristics of macrophages in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and establish a prognostic model based on macrophage-related genes.

Method: We performed scRNA-seq analysis to investigate macrophage heterogeneity and their potential pseudotime evolutionary processes.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. Late-stage detection and the complex molecular mechanisms driving tumor progression contribute significantly to its poor prognosis. Dysregulated R-loops, three-stranded nucleic acid structures associated with genome instability, play a key role in the malignant characteristics of various tumors.
