A new kinetic-spectrophotometric method for the determination of trace amounts of manganese(II) has been proposed. The method is based on the manganese (II) catalyzing the coloring reaction of tetrabase [4,4'-bis (dimethylamino)-diphenylmethane] oxidized by sodium periodate in HAc-NaAc (pH approximately 5.0) medium. The linear range of the determination of manganese is 0-4 microg x L(-1), and the detection limit is 4.6 x 10(-11) g x mL(-1). The method is not only simple, rapid and with good sensitivity but also without heating. It has been used for the determination of trace amounts of manganese in water sample with satisfactory results. The in detail. mechanism of the reaction is discussed
