The quartz depolarizer consisting of two wedge-shaped quartz crystals was designed based on the Lyot depolarizer. The quartz depolarizer is used to reduce the polarization response of spectral instruments. The residual degree of polarization of the quartz depolarizer was derived by the method of matrix optics, so the variation regularity of its depolarization characteristic was analysed concerning its center thickness and the status of the incident radiation in the UV-VUV spectral range. Its depolarization effect was obvious for the radiation with some spectral bandwidth. Also, the depolarization characteristic of the quartz depolarizer was studied experimentally with 1-meter Seya-Namioka UV-VUV spectrometer, using LiF crystals as the polarizer and analyzer. The residual degree of polarization of the quartz depolarizer was less than 1%. Both the theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the quartz depolarizer we designed is appropriate to the spectral measurement with high accuracy.

In this study, to improve the uniformity of transmission light intensity of depolarizer, we present an optimal design of the quaternion space pseudo-depolarizer consisting of four wedge crystals. By designing the optical axis and wedge angle of each crystals, the square distribution of the output spot is realized. The mathematical expression of the degree of depolarization is obtained using the light wave superposition method.

In this paper, we investigate depolarization properties of a quartz double-wedge Cornu depolarizer with respect to the generation of spatially unpolarized light in terms of on-average randomly occupied states on the Poincaré sphere. Spatially resolved Stokes parameter measurements yield transformed polarization states and polarization-dispersed characteristic fringes for the Stokes parameters. Their spatial symmetry, the degree of polarization, and spatially integrated Stokes parameters as a function of the aperture-determined input diameter together with a Mueller matrix calculus model confirm the successful generation of equator states incorporating the ensemble of all purely linearly polarized states, thus on spatial average representing unpolarized light.

The main portion of the space-borne grating imaging spectrometer-grating has intense polarization response. The objective of spectrometer is to measure the intensity accurately without bias as to the incident polarization state. One common method to overcome polarization bias in optical systems is the insertion of a depolarizer.

The optical technique of surface plasmon resonance phase imaging (SPR-PI) is implemented in a linear microarray format for real-time measurements of surface bioaffinity adsorption processes. SPR-PI measures the phase shift of p-polarized light incident at the SPR angle reflected from a gold thin film in an ATR Kretschmann geometry by creating an interference fringe image on the interface with a polarizer-quartz wedge depolarizer combination. The position of the fringe pattern in this image changes upon the adsorption of biomolecules to the gold thin film.

What we believe to be a novel amplitude sensitive optical heterodyne polarimeter in which a Zeeman laser is associated with balanced detector detection was set up. The aim was to measure the optical activity of a quartz crystal with a Cornu depolarizer at high accuracy. The features of this novel polarimeter, which include the use of a two-frequency laser that ensures the accuracy of the measurement, are discussed.
