Published: March 2005

Traditional Indonesian medicinal plants were screened for their inhibitory effects on the nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages and for the antioxidant activity through the evaluation of free radical scavenging effect and reducing power. The results of screening indicated that 50 methanolic extracts inhibited (>50%) lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-induced NO release from RAW264.7 cells at 50 microg/ml, with 18 having greater than 100% inhibition. At 200 microg/ml, 61 methanol extracts exhibited inhibitory activity (>50%), with 45 showing greater than 100% inhibition. In addition, the free radical scavenging effects of 6 methanolic extracts were found to be more than 50% for extract concentration of 0.5 mug/ml. The results indicate that the extracts contain active compounds that inhibit NO release and scavenge free radical.

The effects of age and other individual factors on radiation induced ESR signals from fingernails.

Biodosimetry is crucial for assessing ionizing radiation exposure to guide medical responses. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy using fingernails can be effectively used for both occupational and public dose assessments in radiological accidents because of their accessibility and ability to retain stable radiation-induced free radicals. However, despite two decades of research, challenges remain in achieving accurate fingernail dosimetry, mainly owing to the variation in ESR signals among individuals.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the safety and long-term outcomes of a one-stage resection and anastomosis approach without preoperative decompression in patients with left-sided incomplete obstructive colorectal cancer.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 571 patients diagnosed with pT3-4NanyM0 left-sided colorectal cancer who underwent radical resection and primary anastomosis without preoperative decompression or a diverting stoma from April 2012 to December 2019. Of these, 97 (17%) patients presented with incomplete obstruction, while 474 (83%) had no obstruction.

Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), elevated synovial inflammation, synovial hyperplasia and fibrosis are the main characteristic of microenvironment in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Macrophages and fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) play crucial roles in the progression of RA. Hence, synergistic combination of ROS scavenging, macrophage polarization from pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype towards M2 anti-inflammatory phenotype, and restoring homeostasis of FLSs will provide a promising therapeutic strategy for RA.

Emerging strategies for nitric oxide production and their topical application as nanodressings to promote diabetic wound healing.

The challenges associated with prolonged healing or non-healing of chronic diabetic wounds contribute significantly to the increased incidence of lower limb amputation. A pivotal factor in the impediment of healing is the reduced production of endogenous nitric oxide (NO) due to the hyperglycemic microenvironment typical of chronic diabetes. While both endogenous and exogenous NO have been shown to promote the healing process of diabetic wounds, the direct application of NO in wound management is limited due to its gaseous nature and the risk of explosive release.

With the progress of atherosclerosis (AS), the arterial lumen stenosis and compact plaque structure, the thickening intima and the narrow gaps between endothelial cells significantly limit the penetration efficiency of nanoprobe to plaque, weakening the imaging sensitivity and therapy efficiency. Thus, in this study, a HO-NIR dual-mode nanomotor, Gd-doped mesoporous carbon nanoparticles/Pt with rapamycin (RAPA) loading and AntiCD36 modification (Gd-MCNs/Pt-RAPA-AC) was constructed. The asymmetric deposition of Pt on Gd-MCNs catalyzed HO at the inflammatory site to produce O, which could promote the self-motion of the nanomotor and ease inflammation microenvironment of AS plaque.
