Evaluating Material Design Principles for Calcium-Ion Mobility in Intercalation Cathodes.

Multivalent-ion batteries offer an alternative to Li-based technologies, with the potential for greater sustainability, improved safety, and higher energy density, primarily due to their rechargeable system featuring a passivating metal anode. Although a system based on the Ca/Ca couple is particularly attractive given the low electrochemical plating potential of Ca, the remaining challenge for a viable rechargeable Ca battery is to identify Ca cathodes with fast ion transport. In this work, a high-throughput computational pipeline is adapted to (1) discover novel Ca cathodes in a largely unexplored space of "empty intercalation hosts" and (2) develop material design rules for Ca-ion mobility.

Several neurodegenerative diseases are associated with the deposition of amyloid fibrils. Although these diseases are irreversible, knowing the aggregation mechanism is useful in developing drugs that can arrest or decrease the aggregation rate. In this study, we are interested in investigating the effect of Coomassie brilliant blue (CBB G-250) on the aggregation of hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) at pH 7.

Mitochondrial dysfunctions are closely associated with different types of disease, including cancer. Carnitine acetyltransferase (CRAT) is a mitochondrial-localized enzyme catalyzing the reversible transfer of acyl groups from an acyl-CoA thioester to carnitine and regulates the ratio of acyl-CoA/CoA. Our bioinformatics analysis using public database revealed a significant decrease of CRAT expression in ovarian cancer (OC).

Nature provides many examples of the benefits of nanoscopic surface structures in areas of adhesion and antifouling. Herein, the design, fabrication, and characterization of liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) films are presented with nanowire surface structures that exhibit tunable stimuli-responsive deformations and enhanced adhesion properties. The LCE films are shown to curl toward the side with the nanowires when stimulated by heat or organic solvent vapors.

Bionic adhesive materials with 3D complex micro/nanostructures have several advantages of low preload, strong adhesion, switchable adhesion, etc. As the primary high-precision fabrication method for such materials, lithography is inherently limited by its 2D processing capabilities. Achieving complex 3D morphologies typically requires auxiliary processes, such as dipping and double-sided separate UV exposures, which increase both the complexity and limitations of the fabrication process.
