Background: Ecthyma gangrenosum (EG) is a cutaneous infectious disease characterized by eschar-like skin ulcers typically caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Here, we report a case of relapsing EG in a patient who had returned from a trip to Colombia, thus establishing EG as an important differential diagnosis of tropical diseases, and demonstrating that even long-term antibiotic treatment can result in only partial remission of EG.

Case Presentation: A 77-year-old man with underlying chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) on ibrutinib treatment was admitted because of a superinfected mosquito bite on the left ear and multiple partially necrotic skin lesions disseminated all over the entire body five days after returning from a trip to Colombia.

TLR4-Based Immunotherapeutics in Cancer: A Review of the Achievements and Shortcomings.

Mol Pharm

November 2018

Department of Pharmaceutics, Institute of Pharmacy , University of Bonn, D-53121 Bonn , Germany.

Toll-like Receptor 4 (TLR4) agonists have had a long journey in the field of cancer immunotherapy. Nevertheless, despite the remarkable number of the TLR4 ligands that have gone through various preclinical and clinical stages, only two (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and monophosphoryl lipid A (MPLA)) have hitherto obtained the FDA approval for clinical application in cancer treatment. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the TLR4 agonists' journey as cancer active immunotherapeutics.

Ultrasonic imaging: safety considerations.

Interface Focus

August 2011

Joint Department of Physics , Institute of Cancer Research, Royal Marsden Hospital, Sutton SM2 5PT , UK.

Modern ultrasound imaging for diagnostic purposes has a wide range of applications. It is used in obstetrics to monitor the progress of pregnancy, in oncology to visualize tumours and their response to treatment, and, in cardiology, contrast-enhanced studies are used to investigate heart function and physiology. An increasing use of diagnostic ultrasound is to provide the first photograph for baby's album-in the form of a souvenir or keepsake scan that might be taken as part of a routine investigation, or during a visit to an independent high-street 'boutique'.
