Spectra of jet-cooled methanol in the overtone and combination region from 5000 to 14 000 cm(-1) have been obtained by means of infrared laser-assisted photofragment spectroscopy. Many of the observed features are assigned to combination bands of the type nnu(1)+nu(6), nnu(1)+nu(8), and nnu(1)+nu(6)+nu(8) (n=1,2,3), where nu(1) is the OH stretch, nu(6) is the OH bend, and nu(8) is the CO stretch. These bands show sharp torsion-rotation structure with features as narrow as 0.1 cm(-1). We also observe CH stretch overtones that are weaker than the OH containing combination bands and lack distinct torsion-rotation structure above v(CH)=2. The extent of observed structure on these bands allows us to place limits on the intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution decay rates in the upper vibrational states. We report a global fit of the observed band centers to a simple expression involving low-order anharmonicity constants.

Effect of Temperature on the OH-Stretching Bands of the Methanol Dimer.

We present a conceptually simple model for understanding the significant spectral changes that occur with the temperature in the infrared spectra of hydrogen-bound complexes. We have measured room-temperature spectra of the methanol dimer and two deuterated isotopologues in the OH(D)-stretching region. We correctly predict spectral changes observed in the gas phase for the bound OH stretch in the methanol dimer from jet-cooled to room temperature and corroborate this with experimental and theoretical results for deuterated isotopologues.

Vibrational spectra of the mixed dimer and the two mixed trimers of methanol and formic acid as well as some of their isotopologues are presented. Out of the eight expected OH stretching fundamentals of these three pre-reactive hydrogen-bonded complexes, the three modes mainly involving an acid OH group bound to the alcohol appear to be missing in the jet-cooled spectra despite a combination of infrared and Raman probing. A possibility of spectral overlap is discussed in the mixed dimer case, but largely discarded.

This article demonstrates experimental proof of excited state 'solvent-to-chromophore' proton transfer (ESPT) in the isolated gas phase PBI (2,2'-pyridylbenzimidazole)-CHOH complex, aided by computational calculations. The binary complexes of PBI with CHOH/CHOD were produced in a supersonic jet-cooled molecular beam and the energy barrier of the photo-excited process was determined using resonant two-colour two-photon ionization spectroscopy (R2PI). The ESPT process in the PBI-CHOH complex was confirmed by the disappearance of the Franck-Condon active vibrational transitions above 000 + 390 cm.

The electronic states and photochemistry including nonradiative decay (NRD) and trans(E) → cis(Z) isomerization of methylcinnamate (MC) and its hydrogen-bonded complex with methanol have been investigated under jet-cooled conditions. S1(1nπ*) and S2(1ππ*) are directly observed in MC. This is the first direct observation of S1(1nπ*) in cinnamate derivatives.

Measuring Intermolecular Binding Energies by Laser Spectroscopy.

The ground-state dissociation energy, D0(S0), of isolated intermolecular complexes in the gas phase is a fundamental measure of the interaction strength between the molecules. We have developed a three-laser, triply resonant pump-dump-probe technique to measure dissociation energies of jet-cooled M•S complexes, where M is an aromatic chromophore and S is a closed-shell 'solvent' molecule. Stimulated emission pumping (SEP) via the S0→S1 electronic transition is used to precisely 'warm' the complex by populating high vibrational levels v" of the S0 state.
