Tissue-engineering scaffolds should be analogous to native extracellular matrix (ECM) in terms of both chemical composition and physical structure. Polymeric nanofiber matrix is similar, with its nanoscaled nonwoven fibrous ECM proteins, and thus is a candidate ECM-mimetic material. Techniques such as electrospinning to produce polymeric nanofibers have stimulated researchers to explore the application of nanofiber matrix as a tissue-engineering scaffold. This review covers the preparation and modification of polymeric nanofiber matrix in the development of future tissue-engineering scaffolds. Major emphasis is also given to the development and applications of aligned, core shell-structured, or surface-functionalized polymer nanofibers. The potential application of polymer nanofibers extends far beyond tissue engineering. Owing to their high surface area, functionalized polymer nanofibers will find broad applications as drug delivery carriers, biosensors, and molecular filtration membranes in future.

We previously prepared self-reinforced chitin composite (SR-ChC) films, also called all-chitin composites, comprising two components, that is, scale-down chitin nanofibers (SD-ChNFs) with high crystallinity and scale-down low-crystalline chitin (SD-LC-Ch) matrixes. In this study, we precisely evaluated hydrophilicity under water enviromental conditions and its effect on cell adhesion using human-derived cancer cells on the SR-ChC film surfaces. The surface analysis of the SR-ChC films with reduced crystallinity revealed reorientation of the molecular chain assemblies with amino groups in the SD-LC-Ch components in water.

The development of an efficient coating with comprehensive antimicrobial and anticorrosion properties for metals is crucial. The present study used a one-pot strategy to fabricate a high-performance nanocomposite coating of carboxylated nitrile butadiene rubber/cellulose nanofibers/zinc oxide (XNBR/CNF-ZnO), demonstrating excellent potential for application in the protection against metal corrosion. Eco-friendly CNF-ZnO nanomaterials, prepared using the in-situ generation method, were used as reinforcing fillers, while XNBR was used as the matrix material.

The effective prevention and treatment of anastomotic leakage after intestinal anastomosis for colorectal diseases is still a major clinical challenge. In order to assist intestinal anastomosis healing and avoid anastomotic leakage caused by high tension, low blood supply or infection, we designed a double-layer nanofiber intestinal anastomosis scaffold, which was composed of electrospun PTMC/PHA nanofibers as the main layer, and electrospun PVA/OHA-Gs nanofibers with antibacterial properties as the antibacterial surface layer. This double-layer scaffold has good toughness, its maximum tensile force value could reach 8 N, elongation could reach 400 %, and it has hydrophilic properties, and its contact angle was about 60°.

Regulation of the immune response is key to promoting bone regeneration by electroactive biomaterials. However, how electrical signals at the micro- and nanoscale regulate the immune response and subsequent angiogenesis during bone regeneration remains to be elucidated. Here, the distinctly different surface potential distributions on charged poly(vinylidene fluoridetrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) matrix surfaces are established by altering the dimensions of ferroelectric nanofillers from 0D BaTiO nanoparticles (homogeneous surface potential distribution, HOPD) to 1D BaTiO nanofibers (heterogeneous surface potential distribution, HEPD).

Most of the developed flexible hydrogel supercapacitors struggle to maintain their electrochemical stability and structural integrity under tensile strain. Therefore, developing a flexible supercapacitor with excellent mechanical properties and stable electrochemical performance under different strains remains a challenge. Based on the previous cartilage-like structure, we designed a new coarse nanofiber bundle and ordered network.
