AI Article Synopsis

  • Shift work in industrial settings, especially in the Far North, is prevalent but linked to higher morbidity rates among workers.
  • Examination of "Gazprom" shift workers reveals significant health issues, including increased instances of isolated systolic hypertension and higher anxiety levels, particularly among those with hypertension.
  • The study concludes that shift work negatively impacts physiological and psychological functioning, leading to stress on regulatory systems, reduced functional reserves, and increased health problems.

Article Abstract

Objectives: Shift work is an expeditionary method, and it has become quite common for the maintenance of industrial process in the Far North. In spite of good equipment and a high professional standard of the medical personnel in the majority of northern enterprises, the level of morbidity tends to increase. The aims of our work were to evaluate the psychophysiological alterations in shift-workers during transit labour.

Methods: Shift workers of "Gazprom" Public Corporation were examined in conditions of the Far North using psychological and physiological methods.

Results: The morbidity of shift workers is higher than that of non-transit workers working in the same industries. Distinct changes of the functional condition of the cardiorespiratory system were discovered. While comparing shift workers of the Far North with workers of the Central regions of Russia we discovered an essential prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension (44.6%) in the first group. It is established that an increase of anxiety level (situational and personal) is much more common in persons having haemodynamic signs of hypertension. For workers in intraregional shift work metabolic exchange disorders, and for workers in inter-regional shift disorders of immune resistance are typical.

Conclusions: Our results have shown that shift work is accompanied by stress of regulatory and adaptable systems, a decrease of functional reserves and an increased morbidity and frequent relapses.

Background: India is undergoing a significant demographic shift with a growing older population, leading to an anticipated increase in people with dementia. Family caregivers, who are predominantly informal, carry the burden of care within households, facing numerous challenges that impact their well-being. Despite the cultural emphasis on family support, there is a lack of targeted interventions for caregivers in India.

The COVID-19 pandemic had wide impacts and repercussions for the NHS in the UK beyond the acute medical sector. This qualitative study evaluates the experience of medical (4) and non-medical prescribers (7) plus other staff (2 recovery workers; 2 community pharmacists) involved in opioid substitution therapy (OST) in a southern English county during and following the COVID-19 pandemic. Remote contact and a shift to predominantly weekly OST pick-up were anxiety-producing for clinicians, especially during the first lockdown.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists provided updated guidance in 2021, recommending that reproductive health professionals should include discussion of environmental exposures with their patients. However, environmental health is seldom included in medical training, with endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as phthalates-linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes-being among the least discussed. We developed a one-hour virtual educational intervention to train reproductive health professionals on the routes of phthalate exposure, potential associated health impacts, and suggestions on how to discuss exposure reduction with patients.

Background: Napping during night shifts is a countermeasure against fatigue and sleepiness, which both impact patient safety. However, there is insufficient evidence on how nurses nap, especially concerning their napping quality. This study explored night-shift napping and its associated factors among nurses, considering napping quantity and quality, to mitigate fatigue and sleepiness.
