A new calix[4]resorcinarene bearing eight hydroxamic acid groups (C4RAHA) has been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR and elemental analysis. Its analytical properties were investigated, and showed high affinity and selectivity toward thorium(IV) in the presence of large quantities of associated metal ions. Thorium(IV) was extracted from an ethyl acetate solution of C4RAHA at pH 4.5. The lambdamax and molar absorptivity (epsilon) for thorium(IV) were 341 nm and 7120 l mol(-1) cm(-1). The complexation of thorium(IV) with C4RAHA has a 4:1 metal:ligand stoichiometry, which is relatively rare. The extracts were directly aspirated in the plasma for ICP-AES measurements for thorium(IV) in the presence of a diversified matrix. The system obeyed Beer's law over the range 0.1 - 6.5 microg ml(-1) of thorium(IV) with a Sandell sensitivity of 0.0325 microg cm(-2). The preconcentration factor and overall stability constant evaluated at 25 degrees C for thorium(IV) were 133 and 15.86, respectively. The complexation was characterized by a favorable enthalpy change. A liquid-membrane transport study of thorium(IV) was carried out from the source to the receiving phase under controlled conditions, and a mechanism of transport proposed. To check the validity of the proposed method, thorium(IV) was determined in monazite sand, rare earth sand and water samples.

Thorium (Th) is commonly used in various applications, but its long-term exposure poses health risks, necessitating its detection in aqueous environments. Traditional methods such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry are sensitive but require complex instrumentation. Optical sensors, particularly fluorometry-based methods, are simpler, cost-effective, and selective.

Reactions of the rigid thioether- and selenoether-containing ligand salts [{Li(AE)}] (E = S or Se; AE = 4,5-bis(phenylchalcogenido)-2,7,9,9-tetramethylacridanide) with ThCl(dme) or UCl (for E = Se) afforded the actinide chalcogenoether complexes [(AE)ThCl] (E = S (), Se ()), and [(ASe)UCl] (). X-ray crystal structures of - revealed tetravalent actinide cations complexed to two κ-coordinated AE ligands, with Th-ER and U-ER distances below the sum of the covalent radii. Complexes - provide extremely rare examples of thorium-thioether, thorium-selenoether, and uranium-selenoether bonds, and and contain the shortest known Th-SR and Th-SeR distances.

Actinide metallacyclic chemistry has been of interest due to its involvement in various chemical processes. However, fundamental understanding on the key species, actinide metallacyclic complexes, is limited to metallacyclopropenes whereas little is known about the actinide metallacyclopropynes presumably due to their unusual high reactivity. Herein, we report the preparation of a thorium metallacyclopropyne complex (η-C ≡ C)ThCl in the gas phase by using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and it is generated via a single-ligand strategy through sequential losses of CO and HCl from the monopropynoate precursor (HC ≡ CCO)ThCl upon collision-induced dissociation.

Reaction of thorium(IV) nitrate with 2-[(4-phenyl-1-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)meth-yl]pyridine () yielded (H)[Th(NO)] or (CHN)[Th(NO)] (), instead of the expected mixed-ligand complex [Th(NO) ], which was detected in the mass spectrum of . In the structure, the [Th(NO)] anions display an icosa-hedral coordination geometry and are connected by H cations through C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The H cations inter-act N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds.

One of the major challenges in processing rare-earth element (REE) materials arises from the large amounts of radioactive thorium (Th) that are often found within REE minerals, encouraging enhanced metal separation procedures. We report here a study aimed at developing improved systems for REE processing with the goal of efficient extraction of Th(IV) from acidic solution. A tripodal ligand, TRPN-CMPO-Ph, was prepared that utilizes carbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO) chelators tethered to a tris(3-aminopropyl)amine (TRPN) capping scaffold.
