In this study, the dose distribution delivered by low dose rate Cs-137 brachytherapy sources was investigated using Monte Carlo (MC) techniques and polymer gel dosimetry. The results obtained were compared with a commercial treatment planning system (TPS). The 20 mm and the 30 mm diameter Selectron vaginal applicator set (Nucletron) were used for this study. A homogeneous and a heterogeneous-with an air cavity-polymer gel phantom was used to measure the dose distribution from these sources. The same geometrical set-up was used for the MC calculations. Beyond the applicator tip, differences in dose as large as 20% were found between the MC and TPS. This is attributed to the presence of stainless steel in the applicator and source set, which are not considered by the TPS calculations. Beyond the air cavity, differences in dose of around 5% were noted, due to the TPS assuming a homogeneous water medium. The polymer gel results were in good agreement with the MC calculations for all the cases investigated.

Background: VY-TAU01 is a recombinant humanized IgG4 monoclonal antibody (mAb) directed against pathological tau for the treatment of patients with mild dementia or mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Both VY-TAU01 and its parental mouse IgG1 mAb Ab-01 target an epitope in the C-terminus of tau, bind pathological tau with high affinity and selectivity over wild-type tau, block paired helical filament seed-induced tau aggregates in vitro, and selectively stain tau tangles in AD and P301S mouse (C57/B6J-Tg[Thy1-MAPT*P301S]2541Godt) brain. Ab-01 robustly inhibits seeding and propagation of pathological tau in a P301S mouse seeding model.

Variants in the granulin gene (GRN) that cause a reduction of PGRN in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The sortilin receptor (SORT1) on neurons and microglia regulates PGRN degradation.

Over the past 40 years, the introduction and refinement of hydroxyurea therapy has led to remarkable progress for the care of individuals with sickle cell anemia (SCA). From initial small proof-of-principle studies to multi-center Phase 3 controlled clinical trials and then numerous open-label studies, the consistent benefits of once-daily oral hydroxyurea have been demonstrated across the lifespan. Elevated fetal hemoglobin (HbF) serves as the most important treatment response, as HbF delays sickle hemoglobin polymerization and reduces erythrocyte sickling.

Background: This in vitro study evaluated the efficacy of professional and home-use fluoride regimens for protecting irradiated enamel, undergoing pH cycling resembling xerostomia.
Methods: Sixty human premolar teeth were irradiated with a total dose of 70 Gy and subsequently sectioned into 3 × 3 cm enamel slabs. These slabs were randomly distributed into five groups (n = 12 per group): professional-use groups received fluoride varnish either weekly (FV1) or biweekly (FV2); home-use groups applied 5000 ppm (FT5) or 1450 ppm (FT) fluoride toothpaste; and a control group (control) received no treatment.

intra-arc binary collimation (iABC) is a novel treatment technique in which dynamic conformal arcs are periodically interrupted with binary collimation. It has demonstrated its utility through planning studies for the treatment of multiple metastases. However, the binary collimation approach is idealized in the planning system, while the treatment deliveries must adhere to the physical limitations of the mechanical systems involved [e.
