The versatile bacterium Kytococcus schroeteri is known for producing putative secondary metabolites. These include antimicrobials and other therapeutically significant compounds. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens has necessitated the exploration of possible sources for novel drug candidates.

It has been established that the human atrial natriuretic peptide is able to alter the effect of azithromycin on H01 and 209P monospecies and binary biofilms. The effect of the hormone depends on the surface type and cultivation system, and it may have both enhancing and counteracting effects. The antagonistic effect of the hormone was observed mostly on hydrophobic surfaces, whereas the additive effect was observed on hydrophilic surfaces like glass.

Oftentimes, Gram-positive cocci are the cause for periprosthetic joint infections (PJI). Most of these infections include bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis or other coagulase-negative staphylococci. We here present the first case of a PJI caused by Kytococcus schroeteri.

64 years old male presented fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, COVID-19 infection with bioprosthetic mitral in situ, cardio embolic stroke 2 years ago. The 2 D ECHO showed a vegetation indicating infective endocarditis. Three paired blood cultures grew Kytococcus schroeteri.
