Published: February 2005

Background: It is often difficult to distinguish leucoplakia from carcinoma or chronic laryngitis. In this study, we examined if color texture optical biopsies are able to detect leukoplakia reliably and to distinguish this from normal vocal fold tissue.

Methods: 25 images from patients with a normal larynx and 25 images from patients with leucoplakia were analysed retrospectively. The images were recorded with a rigid 90 degrees -laryngoscope (Wolf Typ 4450.571) during a clinical setting and were recorded by a S-VHS-videorecorder. With a software program (InSegT), regions with leucoplakia, normal tissue and suspicious tissue were manually marked. Within each marked region, the use of color texture analysis numeric features were calculated to characterize the surface in texture and color. Color histogramms (HST), Sum- and Difference histogramms (S/D), Statistical Geometric Features (SGF) and Grey-Value-Dependent-Matrix (GLDM) were used.

Patients: 29 women and 21 men (age 18 to 81 years, average of 53 years), who were examined in our clinic from 10/1999 - 8/2003, took part in this study.

Results: The automatized classification for color texture analysis resulted in 71 % for leucoplakia and 97 % for normal tissue.

Conclusion: Optical biopsies can contribute to find the correct diagnosis. However, classification results must still get better when optical biopsies should be used in clinical practice.

Reconstructing severe cervical scar contractures (SCSC) remains a considerable challenge. This study presents a novel approach to SCSC reconstruction using a combination of pre-expanded bipedicled forehead and lower trapezius musculocutaneous flaps. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 25 patients who underwent this procedure between April 2004 and July 2020.

Attention mechanisms such as the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) can help emphasize and refine the most relevant feature maps such as color, texture, spots, and wrinkle variations for the avocado ripeness classification. However, the CBAM lacks global context awareness, which may prevent it from capturing long-range dependencies or global patterns such as relationships between distant regions in the image. Further, more complex neural networks can improve model performance but at the cost of increasing the number of layers and train parameters, which may not be suitable for resource constrained devices.

ShadowGAN-Former: Reweighting self-attention based on mask for shadow removal.

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy.

Shadow removal remains a challenging visual task aimed at restoring the original brightness of shadow regions in images. Many existing methods overlook the implicit clues within non-shadow regions, leading to inconsistencies in the color, texture, and illumination of the reconstructed shadow-free images. To address these issues, we propose an efficient hybrid model of Transformer and Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), named ShadowGAN-Former, which utilizes information from non-shadow regions to assist in shadow removal.

The rising demand for plant-based meat analogues presents challenges in replicating the sensory qualities of animal meat. This study investigates the impact of Pichia-derived porcine myoglobin (PMb) and bovine hemoglobin (BHb) on the flavor profile, sensory attributes, macrostructure, color, and texture of high-moisture extruded soy protein concentrate-wheat gluten. The addition of PMb and BHb significantly altered the flavor profile by decreasing aldehyde content (hexanal and nonanal), while the contents of ketones (2,3-octanedione and 3,5-octadien-2-one), pyrazines (2-ethyl-6-methylpyrazine), and furans (2-pentylfuran) were increased.

This paper proposes an imaging technique to remove strong reflections from specular surfaces using polarization characteristics combined with light field imaging. Firstly, the correct strong reflection region is found by studying the reflected light characteristics, and the strong reflection region highlights are filtered out using Stokes parameters based on polarization information. Then, a system of microlens arrays with different transmittances was built for imaging, and the system was image-corrected to enable more information about the scene to be captured.
