Immune reactions to medical implants often lead to encapsulation by fibrotic tissue and impaired device function. This process is thought to initiate by protein adsorption, which enables immune cells to attach and mount an inflammatory response. Previously, several antifibrotic materials have been either designed to reduce protein adsorption or discovered via high-throughput screens (HTS) to favorably regulate inflammation.

The Damaraland mole-rat (DMR; Fukomys damarensis) is a long-lived (~ 20 years) Bathyergid rodent that diverged 26 million years ago from its close relative, the naked mole-rat (NMR). While the properties of NMR cultured fibroblasts have been extensively studied and have revealed several unusual features of this cancer-resistant, long-lived species, comparative DMR studies are extremely limited. We optimized conditions for successfully culturing primary DMR skin fibroblasts and also established immortalized DMR cells using simian virus 40 early region expression.

Dinoflagellate chromosomes are extraordinary, as their organization is independent of architectural nucleosomes unlike typical eukaryotes and shows a cholesteric liquid crystal state. 5-hydroxymethyluridine (5hmU) is present at unusually high levels and its function remains an enigma in dinoflagellates chromosomal DNA for several decades. Here, we demonstrate that 5hmU contents vary among different dinoflagellates and are generated through thymidine hydroxylation.

Nanomaterials possess unusual physicochemical properties including unique optical, magnetic, electronic properties, and large surface-to-volume ratio. However, nanomaterials face some challenges when they were applied in the field of biomedicine. For example, some nanomaterials suffer from the limitations such as poor selectivity and biocompatibility, low stability, and solubility.
