The investigation on the resources of genus Valeriana in China have shown out. About 30 species distributed in Southwest and Northeast China. Four of them were most used as medicine.

The genus Valeriana is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat nervous disorders, sleep disorders, epilepsy and skin diseases. A large number of sesquiterpenoids from this genus have been found to exhibit anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, anti-influenza virus and neuroprotective activities. In order to discover more sesquiterpenoids with structural diversity and bioactivity from Valeriana plants, fifteen sesquiterpenoids, including ten undescribed ones, valernaenes A-J (1, 5-7, 9-11 and 13-15), were isolated from the roots and rhizomes of Valeriana officinalis var.

The currently known species of are herbs, shrubs, small trees and vines. After 20 years without new species of in Mexico, here is described and illustrated the first epiphytic species in the genus. The species was found growing on trees of the cloud forests from central Veracruz in eastern Mexico.

Populations of trioecious plants consists of individuals with staminate, pistillate, and hermaphrodite flowers. Trioecy is extremely rare in angiosperms, and relevant data are scarce.
