Aim: To investigate the cardio-protective effect of crocetin on primary culture of cardiac myocyte treated with noradrenaline.
Methods: After adding crocetin, the primary culture of cardiac myocyte was injured by 1.0 micromol x L(-1) noradrenaline. The activity of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), mitochondrion succinic dehydrogenase (MSDH) and ATPase were assayed. The mitochondrion membrane potential was detected by Rh123. The percentage of cardiac myocyte apoptosis was observed by flow cytometry.
Results: Crocetin significantly decreased the activity of LDH in culture supernatant, increased the activity of MSDH, ATPase (Na+-K+ ATPase, Ca2+ ATPase) and mitochondrion membrane potential.
Conclusion: Crocetin could alleviate the disturbance of energy metabolism and decrease the percentage of apoptosis of cardiac myocyte treated with noradrenaline.

Adult human hearts exhibit limited regenerative capacity. Post-injury cardiomyocyte (CM) loss can lead to myocardial dysfunction and failure. Although neonatal mammalian hearts can regenerate, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive.

Background And Objective: It has been believed that polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) such as torsades de pointes (TdP) seen in patients with long QT syndromes is triggered by creating early afterdepolarization (EAD)-mediated triggered activity (TA). Although the mechanisms creating the TA have been studied intensively, characteristics of the arrhythmogenic (torsadogenic) substrates that link EAD developments to TA formation are still not well understood.
Methods: Computer simulations of excitation propagation in a homogenous two-dimensional ventricular tissue with an anisotropic conduction property were performed to characterize torsadogenic substrates that potentially form TA.

The duration of mechanical systole-also termed the flow time (FT) or left ventricular ejection time (LVET)-is measured by Doppler ultrasound and increasingly used as a stroke volume (SV) surrogate to guide patient care. Nevertheless, confusion exists as to the determinants of FT and a critical evaluation of this measure is needed. Using Doppler ultrasound of the left ventricular outflow tract velocity time integral (LVOT VTI) as well as strain and strain rate echocardiography as grounding principles, this brief commentary offers a model for the independent influences of FT.

Background: Our previous study have demonstrated chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and cardiac dysfunction. However, the molecular mechanisms are complicated and varied. In this study, we first investigated the CaMKIIγ expression and signaling pathway in the pathogenesis of cardiomyocyte apoptosis after CIH.

Purpose Of The Review: This review aims to discuss the process of cardiomyocyte maturation, with a focus on the underlying molecular mechanisms required to form a fully functional heart. We examine both long-standing concepts associated with cardiac maturation and recent developments, and the overall complexity of molecularly integrating all the processes that lead to a mature heart.
Recent Findings: Cardiac maturation, defined here as the sequential changes that occurring before the heart reaches full maturity, has been a subject of investigation for decades.
