Published: July 2005

Aim: The aim of this study is to assess adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity in the serum and placenta of patients with missed abortions, anembryonic pregnancies, and voluntary abortions.

Methods: Nine cases of anembryonic pregnancies and 21 cases of missed abortions (group I, n=30), and voluntary dilatation and curettage cases (group II, n=30) were included in this prospective study. Adenosine deaminase activity in serum and placental tissue was measured according to the Giusti method. The t-test was applied for statistical evaluation with the help of SPSS 9.0.

Results: The mean serum ADA level in the abortion cases (group I) was 9.13+/-1.59 U/l, while it was 17.06+/-6.5 U/l in the control group (group II; p<0.05). Also, the mean placental ADA levels in abortion cases and in the control group were 11.8+/-4.7 nmol/mg protein/min and 25.8+/-6.6 nmol/mg protein/min respectively (p<0.05).

Conclusions: These results suggest that ADA may have a modulatory role in the implantation and duration of pregnancy. Low levels of ADA in early pregnancy may lead to an accumulation of products toxic to DNA and to the subsequent loss of the pregnancy.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated how adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) relate to different neurological disorders.
  • Five specific diseases showed significantly higher CSF ADA levels compared to a noninflammatory control group, with tuberculous meningitis (TBM) showing the highest increase.
  • Strong positive correlations were found between CSF ADA levels and several other laboratory parameters, suggesting that elevated ADA levels might indicate T-cell hyperactivation in the central nervous system.

Background: Adenosine deaminase action on RNA 1 (ADAR1) can convert the adenosine in double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) molecules into inosine in a process known as A-to-I RNA editing. ADAR1 regulates gene expression output by interacting with RNA and other proteins; plays important roles in development, including growth; and is linked to innate immunity, tumors, and central nervous system (CNS) diseases.

Results: In recent years, the role of ADAR1 in tumors has been widely discussed, but its role in CNS diseases has not been reviewed.

Background: Tuberculous spondylitis (TS) and brucellar spondylitis (BS) exhibit certain similarities in clinical presentation and imaging characteristics, making differential diagnosis challenging. Developing a reliable differential diagnosis model can assist clinicians in distinguishing between these two conditions at an early stage, allowing for targeted prevention and treatment strategies.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with TS and BS were retrospectively collected and randomized into training and validation cohorts (ratio 7:3).

Predictive marker for response to trifluridine/tipiracil plus bevacizumab in metastatic colorectal cancer patients.

BMC Cancer

January 2025

Department of Gastroenterological Surgery, Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2-5-1 Shikata-Cho, Kita-Ku, Okayama, 700-8558, Japan.

Objective: Trifluridine/tipiracil (FTD/TPI) is one of the options for late-line treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the specific patient populations that would particularly benefit from it remain unclear. This study attempted to identify predictive markers of chemotherapy efficacy with trifluridine/tipiracil (FTD/TPI), focusing on the RNA-editing enzyme adenosine deaminase acting on RNA 1 (ADAR1) expression and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR).
