Exploration and application of microorganisms related to the inference of the time since deposition (TsD) in semen and blood stains.

Int J Legal Med

December 2024

Department of Forensic Science, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Central South University, No. 172 Tongzipo Road, Changsha, Hunan Province, 410013, PR China.

Determining the time since deposition (TsD) of body fluid stains can provide crucial criminal information to forensic researchers. Although there are studies on inferring residual time through DNA and RNA markers, this requires high sample quality, and microorganisms, as a new type of marker with individual and tissue identification capabilities, have the potential for body fluid recognition and TsD inference. Blood and semen are the most common types of bodily fluid stains at crime scenes, but research on the inference of the TsD of these two types of stains through microorganisms still needs to be explored.

Many bacteria secrete metallophores, low-molecular-weight organic compounds that bind ions with high selectivity and affinity, in order to access essential metals from the environment. Previous work has elucidated the structures and biosynthetic machinery of metallophores specific for iron, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and copper. No physiologically relevant lanthanide-binding metallophore has been discovered despite the knowledge that lanthanide metals (Ln) have been revealed to be essential cofactors for certain alcohol dehydrogenases across a diverse range of phyla.

, a wild plant in southern Africa, is utilized in traditional medicine for various ailments, leading to its endangerment and listing on the Red List of South African Plants. To date, there have been no reports on bacterial endophytes from this plant, their classes of secondary metabolites, and potential medicinal properties. This study presents (i) taxonomic characterization of bacterial endophytes in leaf and root tissues using 16S rRNA, (ii) bacterial isolation, morphological, and phylogenetic characterization, (iii) bacterial growth, metabolite extraction, and LC-MS-based metabolite fingerprinting, and (iv) antimicrobial testing of bacterial crude extracts.

Microbiota changes: the unseen players in cervical cancer progression.

Front Microbiol

February 2024

Núcleo de Pesquisas em Oncologia, Universidade Federal do Pará, Belém, Brazil.

Cervical cancer ranks among the most prevalent cancers globally with high-risk human papillomaviruses implicated in nearly 99% of cases. However, hidden players such as changes in the microbiota are now being examined as potential markers in the progression of this disease. Researchers suggest that changes in the vaginal microbiota might correlate with cervical cancer.
