Objective: Although previous psychophysiological studies have revealed heightened muscular and autonomic responses in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), these studies have not permitted inferences about whether the abnormal responses are a vulnerability factor or are acquired following trauma. The present study reports the first prospective psychophysiological investigation, to the authors' knowledge, of posttraumatic stress responses by prospectively evaluating the auditory startle response in firefighters before and after trauma exposure.

Method: Orbicularis oculi (eye blink) electromyograms and skin conductance responses to 15 100-dB acoustic startle stimuli were assessed in 84 trainee firefighters before trauma exposure. After commencement of active duty, 35 firefighters were reassessed within 4 weeks of exposure to a traumatic event, and 36 firefighters were reassessed as a comparison group that was not exposed to trauma.

Results: In the trauma-exposed group, pretrauma physiological activity was predictive of posttrauma acoustic startle responses. Pretrauma skin conductance response to startle was also predictive of posttraumatic stress severity.

Conclusions: These results provide initial support for elevated startle response being a vulnerability factor for posttraumatic stress responses.

Purpose: A quarter of ICU-patients develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after discharge. These patients could benefit from early detection of PTSD. Therefore, we explored the accuracy of text mining with self-narratives to identify intensive care unit (ICU) patients and surviving relatives at risk of PTSD in a pilot study.

Alternating bilateral sensory stimulation (ABS) is a clinical physical therapy technique effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, its utilization in treating conditions beyond PTSD remains limited. Here, we present a protocol to reduce ethanol-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) using 4 Hz ABS.

Backgrounds: Memory and emotion are especially vulnerable to psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is linked to disruptions in serotonin (5-HT) metabolism. Over 90% of the 5-HT precursor tryptophan (Trp) is metabolized via the Trp-kynurenine (KYN) metabolic pathway, which generates a variety of bioactive molecules. Dysregulation of KYN metabolism, particularly low levels of kynurenic acid (KYNA), appears to be linked to neuropsychiatric disorders.

Uncovering Psychedelics: From Neural Circuits to Therapeutic Applications.

Psychedelics, historically celebrated for their cultural and spiritual significance, have emerged as potential breakthrough therapeutic agents due to their profound effects on consciousness, emotional processing, mood, and neural plasticity. This review explores the mechanisms underlying psychedelics' effects, focusing on their ability to modulate brain connectivity and neural circuit activity, including the default mode network (DMN), cortico-striatal thalamo-cortical (CSTC) loops, and the relaxed beliefs under psychedelics (REBUS) model. Advanced neuroimaging techniques reveal psychedelics' capacity to enhance functional connectivity between sensory cerebral areas while reducing the connections between associative brain areas, decreasing the rigidity and rendering the brain more plastic and susceptible to external changings, offering insights into their therapeutic outcome.

The complexity of our life experiences and the rapid progress in science and technology clearly necessitate reflections from the humanities. The ever-growing intersection between science and society fosters the emergence of novel interdisciplinary fields of research. During the past decade, Medical Humanities arose to meet the need to unravel hidden information beyond technology-driven and fact-based medicine.
