In this study we investigated the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA) in Alzheimer (AD) patients (n=75), patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI, n=9) and patients with depression (n=7). CSF HVA was significantly elevated in AD with depression (Geriatric Depression Scale, 15 point version GDS>5) in comparison to AD without depression (p<0.05, ANOVA) and CSF HVA showed a significant positive correlation with the GDS score of AD-patients (p=0.03, Spearman Rho: 0.38, Spearman Rank Correlation). In the group of AD patients CSF 5-HIAA was positively correlated with cerebrospinal fluid beta-amyloid 1-42 (Abeta42), p<0.05, Spearman Rho: 0.3, Spearman Rank Correlation, but not with CSF tau. Additionally, there was a significant positive correlation between cerebrospinal fluid 5-HIAA and HVA in the group of AD patients (p<0.0001, Rho: 0.47, Spearman Rank correlation). Neither 5-HIAA nor HVA in CSF could differentiate between mild cognitive impairment, depression and AD. The results of this study support the hypothesis that the serotonergic system plays a role in the course of AD. They further suggest an important role of dopamine metabolism in depression within AD patients.

Serotonin is a potent immunomodulatory neurohormone. Activities of the serotonergic and immune systems are often reported together in poultry studies with unidirectional analyses focused on serotonergic signaling mediating immune response. Considering serotonin's relevance across a range of immune-related poultry topics, elucidation of whether the immune system affects the serotonergic system can provide valuable insights into the bi-directionality of poultry neuroendocrine-immune interactions.

Bangia fusco-purpurea polysaccharide (UBFP) with ultra-high pressure assisted extraction has good in vitro hypolipidemic activity. To be explored as a natural hypolipidemic agent, the alleviation effect of UBFP on in vivo dyslipidemia in high-fat diet (HFD) induced mice was further investigated. Compared with native polysaccharide (BFP), UBFP was better to reduce weight gain, fat accumulation, serum and hepatic lipid abnormalities for HFD induced mice.

Monitoring biomarker levels in body fluids is of great importance in clinical diagnosis. Herein, a robust 3D ZnMOF, {[Zn(BTPB)(bib)(μ-OH)]·2HO}, was fabricated based on the ligands of 1,4-bis(2,4,6-tricarboxylpyrid-5-yl)benzene (HBTPB) and 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-yl)benzene (bib). On the basis of its stable architecture and intrinsic luminescence, ZnMOF demonstrated remarkable potential as a bifunctional luminescent sensor for selective and sensitive detecting the biomarkers of 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in water and body fluids by employing distinct "turn-off" and "turn-on" responses.

The judicious selection and combination of multicomponents provide great potential for the further exploration of new polyoxometalate (POM) materials. Here, a delicate control on tungstate, Sb and Bi sources, Eu ions, and organic molecules led to the discovery of a novel multimetal cluster-embedded POM [HN(CH)]NaH{[Eu(HO)SbBiWO](SbWO)(SbWO)}·78HO (). The polyoxoanion of was constructed from four in situ-formed [SbWO] and [SbWO] building blocks connected by two hexa-metallic [Eu(HO)SbBiWO] clusters, to be a rare member of Sb- and Bi-coexisting POM.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how chronic exposure to digoxin affects locomotor activity and brain chemistry in zebrafish.
  • Zebrafish were housed in groups and exposed to 2 μM of digoxin for a week, resulting in increased hyperactivity and decreased anxiety in a novel environment test.
  • The findings reveal significant changes in brain monoamine levels, indicating that cardiotonic steroids like digoxin can influence neurotransmission, which might have implications for neuropsychiatric conditions.
