To decrease diabetes morbidity and mortality rates, early interventions are needed to change lifestyles that are often cemented early, making school-based interventions important. However, with limited resources and lack of within-county diabetes data, it is difficult to determine which local areas require intervention. To identify at-risk school districts, this study mapped diabetes prevalence and related deaths by school district using geographic information systems (GIS).

Rationale: The efficient resolution of tissue hemorrhage is an important homeostatic function. In human macrophages in vitro, heme activates an AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase)/ATF1 (activating transcription factor-1) pathway that directs Mhem macrophages through coregulation of HO-1 (heme oxygenase-1; ) and lipid homeostasis genes.
Objective: We asked whether this pathway had an in vivo role in mice.

Current inotropic therapies improve systolic function in heart failure patients but also elicit undesirable side effects such as arrhythmias and increased intracellular Ca transients. In order to maintain myocyte Ca homeostasis, the increased cytosolic Ca needs to be actively transported back to sarcoplasmic reticulum leading to depleted ATP reserves. Thus, an emerging approach is to design sarcomere-based treatments to correct impaired contractility via a direct and allosteric modulation of myosin's intrinsic force-generating behavior -a concept that potentially avoids the "off-target" effects.

Introduction: WHO recommends antiretroviral treatment (ART) for all HIV-positive individuals. This study evaluated the association between baseline CD4 count and attrition in a cohort of HIV positive adults initiating ART at three department of health (DOH) clinics routinely providing ART at baseline CD4 counts >500cells/μL for the HPTN 071 (PopART) trial.
Methods: All clients attending the DOH clinics were managed according to standard care guidelines with the exception that those starting ART outside of pertinent local guidelines signed research informed consent.
