Aim: To investigate the effects of exogenous unsaturated fatty acids on calcium-activated potassium current (I(K(Ca))) in gastric antral circular myocytes of guinea pigs.
Methods: Gastric myocytes were isolated by collagenase from the antral circular layer of guinea pig stomach. The whole-cell patch clamp technique was used to record I(K(Ca)) in the isolated single smooth muscle cells with or without different concentrations of arachidonic acid (AA), linoleic acid (LA), and oleic acid (OA).
Results: AA at concentrations of 2,5 and 10 micromol/L markedly increased I(K(ca)) in a dose-dependent manner. LA at concentrations of 5, 10 and 20 micromol/L also enhanced I(K(Ca)) in a dose-dependent manner. The increasing potency of AA, LA, and oleic acid (OA) on I(K(Ca)) at the same concentration (10 micromol/L) was in the order of AA>LA>OA. AA (10 micromol/L)-induced increase of I(K(ca)) was not blocked by H-7 (10 micromol/L), an inhibitor of protein kinase C (PKC), or indomethacin (10 micromol/L), an inhibitor of the cyclooxygenase pathway, and 17-octadecynoic acid (10 micromol/L), an inhibitor of the cytochrome P450 pathway, but weakened by nordihydroguaiaretic acid (10 micromol/L), an inhibitor of the lipoxygenase pathway.
Conclusion: Unsaturated fatty acids markedly increase I(K(ca)), and the enhancing potencies are related to the number of double bonds in the fatty acid chain. The lipoxygenase pathway of unsaturated fatty acid metabolism is involved in the unsaturated fatty acid-induced increase of I(K(ca)) in gastric antral circular myocytes of guinea pigs.

Sea urchins, integral to marine ecosystems and valued as a delicacy in Asia and Europe, contain physiologically important long-chain (>C) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in their gonads, including arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n-6), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and unusual non-methylene-interrupted fatty acids (NMI-FA) such as 20:2. Although these fatty acids may partially be derived from their diet, such as macroalgae, the present study on has uncovered multiple genes encoding enzymes involved in long-chain PUFA biosynthesis. Specifically, 3 fatty acid desaturases (FadsA, FadsC1 and FadsC2) and 13 elongation of very-long-chain fatty acids proteins (Elovl-like, Elovl1/7-like, Elovl2/5-like, Elovl4-like, Elovl8-like and Elovl6-like A-H) were identified in their genome and transcriptomes.

Monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG), as the primary lipid component of thylakoid membranes, has a significant part in plant growth and stress response. The current study employed two transgenic wheat lines (MG1516 and MG1314) overexpressing the MGDG synthase gene (TaMGD) and wild-type cv "JW1" to explore the function of TaMGD in response to high temperature stress during the anthesis stage of wheat. Under high-temperature stress, the overexpressed wheat lines exhibited higher grain weight, increased antioxidant enzyme activity, and lower HO and malondialdehyde contents in leaves.

At present, there is no clear consensus on the impact of carbohydrate feeds on bee colony health, and comprehensive research and evaluation in this context is lacking. To comprehensively and objectively examine the health status of honeybees after consuming those carbohydrates from multiple perspectives, experimental techniques, including high-throughput sequencing of the transcriptome, proboscis extension reflex (PER), and measuring bee growth parameters were employed. This study showed that compared with honey, feeding high fructose syrup (HFS) resulted in a decrease in the survival rate and body weight of bees, while sucrose decreased the learning and memory ability of bees.
