The results of cytological and histological investigations of pleural biopsy, obtained using the closed transthoracic puncture pleural biopsy (CTPPB) method in patients, suffering the syndrome of exudative pleuritis of unknown origin, were presented. There were analyzed 69 observations. Peculiarities of histological assessment of pleural biopsies were noted, characteristic morphological signs, observed in the main pleural pathological processes: nonspeciphic inflammation, tuberculous inflammation, tumoral and metastatic affection. Cytological, histological and cytohistological efficacy of pleural pathology diagnosis, while CTPPB conducting, was assessed. Total efficacy of diagnosis according to investigation results was 87% for pleuritis of any origin.
