The residual silanol acidity and activity of several microparticulate and monolithic C18 columns has been measured from the retention of LiNO3 in the columns with a methanol/buffer (1 mM in Na+) (60:40 v/v) mobile phase buffered to different pH values. For Luna C18 (2) and LiChrospher RP-18 columns, at least two different types of silanols with different acidity for each packing, were observed. Purospher RP-18e and Chromolith RP-18e packings present evidence of some active silanols only at pH values close to their basic pH stability limit or higher. The results obtained have been compared with those obtained previously for Resolve C18, Resolve Silica, Symmetry C18, Symmetry Silica, XTerra MSC18 and Underivatized XTerra. A modification of an equation previously proposed has been applied to all columns studied and the results obtained have been used to classify the columns according to their silanol acidity and activity. The method allows the prediction of the extent of the silanol activity of the columns studied at a particular mobile phase pH.

This work presents, for the first time, the preparation method and subsequent use of biosilica in column liquid chromatography in reverse-phase mode. Diatom biosilica consists of the siliceous exoskeletons (frustules) of unicellular algae. Controlled cultivation of Pseudostaurosira trainorii diatoms resulted in frustules with an average diameter of approximately 4 µm, sidewall thickness of 1 µm, and a bottom thickness of 110-150 nm.

Corrosion inhibitors (CIs) are extensively employed in the oil and gas industry, yet their analysis remains a challenge. To develop a suitable liquid chromatography method for a wide array of CIs, a column screening was conducted. Nine different chromatographic conditions were tested across eight RPLC and mixed-mode columns (Accucore C18, CORTECS Shield RP18, Acquity HSS T3, Acquity Premier HSS T3, Accucore 150-C4, Accucore PFP, Synergi Polar RP, and Acclaim WCX-1).

Polyurea has found applications in protective coatings. Yet, the too fast polymerization and lack of functions limit its application. Herein, we report a high-performance polyurea via the stepwise polymerization of an isocyanate (NCO)-terminated prepolymer consisting of poly(propylene glycol)--poly(ethylene glycol)--poly(propylene glycol) (PPG--PEG--PPG) with a nanocluster synthesized via the hydrolysis of -phenylaminomethyltriethoxysilane.

Zwitterionic coatings are an efficient strategy for preventing biomolecule adsorption and enhancing nanoparticle stability in solution. The properties of zwitterions and other antifouling materials, including suppression of nonspecific adsorption and improved colloidal stability of nanoparticles, are believed to derive from their electroneutral and highly hydrophilic nature. Among different zwitterions, short sulfobetaines have been demonstrated to be effective in preventing protein adsorption onto several nanoparticles and providing enhanced colloidal stability.
