Ni(II) and Zn(II) M-DNA formation and denaturation of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) by Cd(2+) were monitored by surface plasmon resonance (SPR). When exposed to immobilized 30 bp 50% GC dsDNA, Zn(2+) and Ni(2+) were found to give signals indicative of a conformational change at pH 8.5 but not 7.5, while Mg(2+) and Ca(2+) caused small changes at both pHs. The concentrations that gave 50% of the maximum responses were 0.06 and 0.50 mM for Zn(2+) and Ni(2+), respectively. At pH 8.5, Cd(2+) denatured over 40% of the dsDNA, while other metals denatured less than 5% of the DNA. Smaller pH-dependent signals were induced by Zn(2+), Ni(2+) or Cd(2+) with 50% GC single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), and with a homopolymer of d(T)30. Homopolymers d(A)30 and d(C)30 showed small signals that were largely independent of pH in the presence of Zn(2+) or Ni(2+).

Ferrihydrite (Fh), a widely distributed mineral in the environment, plays a crucial role in the geochemical cycling of elements. This study used experimental and computational approaches to investigate the adsorption behavior of seven heavy metal ions on Fh. The pH edge analysis revealed that the adsorption capacity followed the order: Pb > Cu > Zn > Cd > Ni > Co > Mn, with Pb showed the highest adsorption.

AISI 316L stainless steel is extensively used in various fields, including medicine. In this study, in order to improve antibacterial properties, reduce elastic modulus, increase hydrophilicity and delay corrosion on the surface of AISI 316L stainless steel pieces for biomedical applications, zinc and magnesium elements were used for coating. Zn monolayer, Zn-Mg bilayer, and Zn-Mg-Zn triple coatings were deposited on AISI 316L substrates using the thermal evaporation method.

Construction of single probes for simultaneous detection of common trivalent metal ions has attracted much attention due to higher efficiency in analysis and cost. A naphthalimide-based fluorescent probe K1 was synthesized for selective detection of Al, Cr and Fe ions. Fluorescence emission intensity at 534 nm of probe K1 in DMSO/HO (9:1, v/v) was significantly enhanced upon addition of Al, Cr and Fe ions while addition of other metal ions (Li, Na, K, Ag, Cu, Fe, Zn, Co, Ni, Mn, Sr, Hg, Ca, Mg, Ce, Bi and Au) did not bring about substantial change in fluorescence emission.

Heavy metals are life-threatening pollutions because of their great toxicity, long-term persistence in nature and their bioaccumulation in living organisms. In this work, we performed multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares analysis of UV-Vis raw spectra received by a colorimetric sensor constructed on mercaptoundecanoic acid functionalized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@11MUA) to detect Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn in water. This combined approach allowed the rapid identification and quantification of multiple heavy metals and showed adequate sensitivity and selectivity, thus representing a promising analytical and computational method for both laboratory and field applications such as environmental safety and public health monitoring.

α-Arbutin is the fourth generation whitening factor in the field of cosmetics, which can block the synthesis of melanin in epidermal cells and has the advantages of good stability and less toxic side effects. Moreover, α-arbutin has potential application value in food, medicine, and other fields. However, the extraction yield from plant tissues is relatively low, which restricts its application value.
