Published: December 2004

Porphyrin nanotubes represent a new class of nanostructures for which the molecular building blocks can be altered to control their structural and functional properties. Nanotubes containing tin(IV) porphyrins are photocatalytically active and can reduce metal ions from aqueous solution. The metal is deposited selectively onto tube surfaces, producing novel composite nanostructures that have potential applications as nanodevices. Two examples presented here are nanotubes with a continuous gold wire in the core and a gold ball at the end and nanotubes coated with platinum nanoparticles mainly on their outer surfaces. The latter are capable of photocatalytic reduction of water to hydrogen.

Effective multicolor visual biosensor for ochratoxin A detection enabled by DNAzyme catalysis and gold nanorod etching.

Mikrochim Acta

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Chemical Sensing & Analysis in Universities of Shandong, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Jinan, Jinan, 250022, People's Republic of China.

A novel detection technique is introduced that offers sensitive and reliable ochratoxin A (OTA) detection. The method leverages the etching of gold nanorods (AuNRs) stabilized by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) using the oxidized form of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl benzidine sulfate (TMB), creating a susceptible multicolor visual detection system for OTA. The visual detection is enabled by Mg-assisted DNAzyme catalysis combined with the catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) signal amplification strategy.

Hemozoin (HZ, a malarial pigment) is an insoluble crystalline byproduct formed during the intraerythrocytic breakdown of hemoglobin by some blood-feeding parasites, such as . It consists of polymerized iron-porphyrin molecular units linked by carboxylic bonds. Due to the rigid molecular structure, studying the electron transfer activity of HZ is challenging.

The structural rigidity of tetrakis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (TPyP) has been utilised to prepare a robust novel porous coordination polymer of composition Cd(TPyP)(sez) (TPyP=5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin, sez=1,2,5-benzoselenadiazole-5-carboxylate). The coordination polymer may be described as a hexagonal porphyrin nanotube (PNT) and has the potential to bind guest molecules through chalcogen bonding. Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) data indicate an internal pore diameter ~9 Å which represents ~35 % of the crystal volume.

Carbon nanotubes constitute an excellent option to connect molecular nanomagnets (MNMs) to solid-state devices, allowing the electrical control of the molecule spin state. The main challenge in this area is to obtain stable nanohybrid structures that preserve the magnetic properties and functionality of the molecule. One of the strategies developed to build these structures combining MNMs and carbon nanotubes involves the encapsulation of the nanotube within magnetic organic macrocycle(s), leading to magnetic mechanically interlocked derivatives of carbon nanotubes (mMINTs).
