Ion-pair formation constants (mol(-1) dm3 unit), K(MX) for a univalent metal salt (MX) and K(MLX) for its ion-pair complex (ML+X-) with a crown ether (L) in water, were determined at various ionic strengths (I) and 25 degrees C by potentiometry with ion-selective electrodes for MX=NaPic, NaMnO4, NaBPh4, KPic, and KMnO4; and MLX = Na(18C6)Pic, K(18C6)Pic, and Na(18C6)BPh4, where Pic- and 18C6 denote a picrate ion and 18-crown-6 ether, respectively. Equations for analyzing I-dependence of logK(MLX) and logK(MX) were derived and fitted well to the I-dependence using a non-linear regression analysis. The equilibrium constants at I = 0 mol dm(-3), K(MLX) degrees and K(MX) degrees, were simultaneously obtained from the analysis. The experimental values of K(MLX) and K(MX) were only in agreement with the values calculated from K(MLX) degrees and K(MX) degrees , respectively, in the ranges of higher I.

A synergistic Pd/Cu catalyst system has been developed for stereodivergent transformation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates and Schiff bases derived from simple amino acids to afford a series of optically active β-branched γ-methyleneglutamic acid derivatives with adjacent tertiary/tertiary and quaternary/tertiary stereocenters in high yields (up to 96 %) with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities (>20/1 dr and >99 % ee in most cases) under mild conditions. The use of SKP ligand is disclosed to be crucial for the success of the transformation, and in particular allowing the reaction to proceed at low catalyst loading (0.02 mol % for Pd and 0.

Plants make pyrimidine base substitutions in organellar mRNAs through the action of sequence-specific nuclear-encoded enzymes. Pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins are essential for ensuring specificity, while the enzymatic DYW domain is often present at the C-terminus of a PPR protein and dependent on the variant possessing C-to-U and/or U-to-C RNA editing activities. Expression of exogenous DYW-KP variant enzymes in bacteria leads to the modification of RNAs suggestive of U-to-C base changes.

Solutions and minerals containing sulfate (SO42-), and Ca2+ and Mg2+ cations, are ubiquitous throughout the lithosphere and are significant components of seawater, thus presenting a prototypical system for the study of strong electrolytes and crystal nucleation mechanisms. However, despite their relative abundance, key questions remain unanswered about the most fundamental atomic-level steps of their mineralization pathways and aqueous dynamics. Here, we carry out enhanced sampling multi-level molecular dynamics (MD) embedded correlated wavefunction theory simulations to elucidate ion-pairing mechanisms for Mg-SO4 and Ca-SO4 in concentrated aqueous solution, accurately capturing effects arising from both structural dynamics and electron exchange-correlation.

Human carnosinases (CNs) are Xaa-His metal-ion-activated aminopeptidases that break down bioactive carnosine and other histidine-containing dipeptides. Carnosine is a bioactive peptide found in meat and prevalently used as a supplement and in functional food formulation. Nonetheless, carnosine is digested by CNs rapidly after ingestion.
