Objective: To study the pathogens of fungus balls in paranasal sinuses and establish an immunohistochemical test by which the main opportunistic fungi could be identified.
Methods: Twenty-five patients with fungal balls were treated by surgical removal of the fungus ball in the infected sinuses. The pathogenic fungi on the specimens were identified by means of routine PAS and immunohistochemical staining methods, and the sensitivity of the two methods were compared.
Results: The most commonly infected sinus was the maxillary sinus, followed by sphenoid sinus. Pathogens of fungal balls were found to be aspergillus (92%, 23/25) and candida 2 cases (8%). Aspergillus and candida albicans in infected sinuses could be specifically identified by immunostainning. There was no statistically significant differences of sensitivity between immunostainning and PAS stain.
Conclusions: The main pathogen of the fungus ball was aspergillus. Immunostainning was a rapid and reliable method to identify fungi in infected tissues of paranasal sinuses. It should be widely used in the diagnosis of fungal sinusitis.

Fungal rhinosinusal infections comprise several nosological entities, including sinus fungus ball. Diagnosis of sinus fungus ball relies on patient interrogation and clinical and paraclinical findings. Mold species commonly involved include Aspergillus, as well as dematiaceous fungi.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is widely used as a bone graft. However, information on the head-to-head osteoinductivity and in vivo performance of micro- and nanosized natural and synthetic HA is still lacking. Here, we fabricated nanosized bovine HA (nanoBHA) by using a wet ball milling method and compared its in vitro and in vivo performance with microsized BHA, nanosized synthetic HA (nanoHA), and microsized synthetic HA (HA).

Objective: The objective of this study was to analyse the aetiology, clinical presentations, histopathology and microbiological aspects of fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS) in patients undergoing endoscopic surgery.
Methods: The descriptive study was carried out over a 4-year period in two Serbian ENT Clinics and included patients with sinonasal pathology who underwent endoscopic surgery.
Results: The study included 26 patients.

Background: A dysbiotic vaginal microbiome (VMB) is associated with clinical conditions such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and an increased risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection. Considering the high prevalence of BV among African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) women, we conducted a prospective, randomized, open-label phase 1 clinical trial to determine the feasibility, safety and tolerability of administering low-dose estrogen, probiotics or both in combination to improve vaginal health and decrease HIV-1 susceptibility.
Methods: ACB women aged 18-49 from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) were randomized to one of four study arms: intravaginal estradiol (Estring©; 7.

We examined global records of accessible natural history voucher collections (with publicly available data and reliable locality data) for terrestrial and freshwater vascular plants, fungi, freshwater fishes, birds, mammals, and herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles) and highlight areas of the world that would be considered undersampled and sometimes called 'unexplored' (., have relatively low, or no evidence of, past sampling efforts) under typical Western-scientific descriptions. We also question what 'unexplored' may mean in these contexts and explain how replacing the term in favor of more nuanced phrasing (.
