Measurement of an individual silver perch Bairdiella chrysoura sound pressure level in a field recording.

Simultaneous audio and video were recorded of a silver perch Bairdiella chrysoura producing its characteristic drumming sound in the field. The background noise contribution to the total sound pressure level is estimated using sounds that occurred between the pulses of the silver perch sound. This background contribution is subtracted from the total sound to give an estimate of the sound pressure level of the individual fish. A silver perch source level in the range 128-135 dB (re: 1 microPa) is obtained using an estimate of the distance between the fish and the hydrophone. The maximum distance at which an individual silver perch could be detected depends on the background sound level as well as the propagation losses. Under the conditions recorded in this study, the maximum detection distance would be 1-7 m from the hydrophone.

The aloe vera/gelatin/sodium alginate hydrogels (AGS) are prepared using different weight ratios of Aloe vera, gelatin, and sodium alginate, aiming to optimize mechanical properties and biocompatibility for biomedical applications. The incorporation of SM-AgNPs and curcumin-loaded NLPs enhanced the hydrogels' antibacterial properties.

Assessment of positive experiences using associative learning in chickens.

To determine whether differences in positive experiences can influence associative learning ability, 2 tasks were conducted with 90 laying hens at the peak of the laying period. The selected hens were reared in a larger flock under the same housing conditions without perches, so they had the same rearing experiences and were moved to either enriched cages or to the floor system at 16 wk of age. They belonged to 3 breeds (Slovenian barred hen: Ba; brown hen: Br; silver hen, S), with 30 hens per breed.

Objective: Modeling of fecundity with allometric, nutritional, and environmental covariates has increased sensitivity of reproductive metrics in many fish species. In estuaries with heavy anthropogenic influence, resident species often experience sublethal health impacts because of increased stress, which can include increases in gonadal pathology, intersex, or potential reproductive failure. This study models the fecundity of the estuarine species White Perch Morone americana in response to health parameters identified as signals of habitat stress, including gross pathology presentation, nutritional condition, and disease presence.
