Purpose: The aim of this study was to gauge the impacts of cognitive empathy training experiential learning on traumatic brain injury (TBI) knowledge, awareness, confidence, and empathy in a pilot study of speech-language pathology graduate students.

Method: A descriptive quasi-experimental convergent parallel mixed methods design intervention pilot study (QUAL + QUANT) was conducted with a diverse convenience sample of 19 first- and second-year speech-language pathology graduate students who engaged in a half-day TBI point-of-view simulation. The simulation was co-constructed through a participatory design with those living with TBI based on Kolb's experiential learning model and followed the recommendations for point-of-view simulation ethics.

Diagnostic Techniques for Posterior Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome.

Cureus

November 2024

Integrated Clinical Education Center, Kyoto University Hospital, Kyoto, JPN.

This case report highlights the diagnostic process for posterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (POCNES) in an older adult female patient, with an emphasis on using video demonstrations to guide clinicians. POCNES should be diagnosed based on a combination of specific clinical features, including localized back pain accompanied by pinpoint tenderness lateral to the spinous process, cutaneous sensory abnormalities over the area of pain, severe pain response to pressure on the tender point, and normal clinical and imaging findings. This case demonstrates how these criteria were identified via a thorough physical examination captured on video to provide a visual guide for clinicians.

Food choices, microstructure of ingestive behavior and sensory perceptions after bariatric surgery in women: A cross-sectional study.

Appetite

February 2025

Lyfe Institute Research Center, Ecully, France; Centre de Recherche en Nutrition Humaine Rhône-Alpes, CarMeN lab, Univ-Lyon, INSERM, INRAe, Claude Bernard Lyon1 University, Centre Hospitalier Lyon Sud, Hospices Civils de Lyon, Pierre Bénite, France. Electronic address:

Unlabelled: Results regarding the impact of bariatric surgery (BS) on food choices are inconsistent between studies based on self-reported questionnaires, and those using direct measurements. Moreover, the determinants of the modifications of food choices after BS, if any, are still poorly understood. This study compared food choices, food liking, microstructure of ingestive behavior and sensory perceptions between women who had BS in the last 18 months (BS group, n = 19; Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy) and women with BMI ≥35 kg m (OB group, n = 17) in ecological conditions and explored the associations of food choices with sensory perceptions and food liking.

Annual Prize Lecture 2024: Endogenous physiological mechanisms as basis for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

J Physiol

December 2024

The NNF Center for Basic Metabolic Research and Department of Biomedical Sciences, The Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen, The Panum Institute, Copenhagen N, Denmark.

In 1964, it was proven that postprandial insulin secretion is largely regulated by gut hormones and, in 1973, it was proposed that a gut hormone would also regulate appetite and food intake. Several gut hormones were tested for metabolic actions with disappointing results until the discovery of the proglucagon derivative, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). This peptide from the distal intestine has preserved activity on insulin secretion in people with type 2 diabetes and turned out to regulate both secretion and motility in the gastrointestinal tract and importantly, appetite and food intake, thus functioning as an efficient 'ileal brake' hormone.

A single-center retrospective chart review of percutaneous PNS for treatment of chronic shoulder pain.

Interv Pain Med

September 2024

SPR Therapeutics, 22901 Millcreek Blvd, Suite 500, Cleveland, OH, 44122, USA.

Objective: The present IRB-approved retrospective chart review describes the use of a 60-day PNS treatment for shoulder pain at a single center in 60 total consecutive patients.

Background: Chronic shoulder pain affects an increasing number of patients per year and is especially prevalent in elderly populations. Percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) treatment targeting the nerves of the shoulder has been shown to reduce pain in prospective clinical studies and in analysis of real-world data.
