We report on the first fabrication of nanostructures with exactly resonant light revealing the quantum character of the atom-light interaction. Classically the formation of nanostructures is not expected; thus, the observed formation of complex periodic line patterns can be explained only by treating atom-light interaction and propagation of the atoms quantum mechanically. Our numerical quantum calculations are in quantitative agreement with this experimental finding. Moreover, the theory predicts that for small detunings nanostructures with lambda/4 period can be produced, which beats the standard nanofabrication limit of lambda/2. Our experiments confirm this prediction.

Objectives: Computer-aided schizophrenia (SZ) detection methods mainly depend on electroencephalogram and brain magnetic resonance images, which both capture physical signals from patients' brains. These inspection techniques take too much time and affect patients' compliance and cooperation, while difficult for clinicians to comprehend the principle of detection decisions. This study proposes a novel method using face diagnosis images based on traditional Chinese medicine principles, providing a non-invasive, efficient, and interpretable alternative for SZ detection.

Our visual system enables us to effortlessly navigate and recognize real-world visual environments. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies suggest a network of scene-responsive cortical visual areas, but much less is known about the temporal order in which different scene properties are analysed by the human visual system. In this study, we selected a set of 36 full-colour natural scenes that varied in spatial structure and semantic content that our male and female human participants viewed both in 2D and 3D while we recorded magnetoencephalography (MEG) data.

Association of early life cardiovascular risk factors with grey matter structure in young adults in the United Kingdom: the ALSPAC study.

EBioMedicine

December 2024

Medical Research Council Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing at UCL, Institute of Cardiovascular Science, University College London, United Kingdom.

Background: Cumulative exposures to obesity, hypertension, and physical inactivity from midlife (40-65 years) onwards are three known cardiovascular risk factors for dementia and associated cerebral structural damage. Exactly how early in the lifespan sensitive periods for exposure to these risk factors begin is yet to be established, specifically with respect to onset of cerebral structural changes. We aimed to investigate whether cardiovascular risk across childhood and adolescence is already associated with cerebral structure in regions previously linked with dementia, during young adulthood.

Spiro-Carbon-Locking and Sulfur-Embedding Strategy for Constructing Deep-Red Organic Electroluminescent Emitter with High Efficiency.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of Supramolecular Structure and Materials, College of Chemistry, Jilin University, Changchun, 130012, P. R. China.

The discovery of multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) materials with remarkable narrowband emission has opened a new avenue for the development of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with high color purity. However, the lack of construction strategies for purely red MR-TADF materials significantly impedes their application in full-color high-definition displays. Herein, we propose a unique and handy approach of spiro-carbon-locking and sulfur-embedding strategy to modify the parent MR-TADF framework, resulting in a red MR-TADF emitter with high color purity.

Linear pressure waves in mono- and poly-disperse bubbly liquids: Attenuation and propagation speed in slow and fast and evanescent modes.

Ultrasonics

February 2025

Department of Engineering Mechanics and Energy, Degree Programs in Systems and Information Engineering, University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba 305-8573, Japan.

Using volumetric averaged equations from a two-fluid model, this study theoretically investigates linear pressure wave propagation in a quiescent liquid with many spherical gas bubbles. The speed and attenuation of sound are evaluated using the derived linear dispersion. Mono- and poly-disperse bubbly liquids are treated.
