Motivated by a recent proposal for an experimental verification of the dynamical Casimir effect, the macroscopic electromagnetic field within a perfect cavity containing a thin slab with a time-dependent dielectric permittivity is quantized in terms of the dual potentials. For the resonance case, the number of photons created out of the vacuum due to the dynamical Casimir effect is calculated for both polarizations. It turns out that only TM modes can be excited efficiently.

In recent years, plastic and metal 3D printing has experienced massive development in the professional and hobby spheres, especially for rapid prototyping, reverse engineering, maintenance and quick repairs. However, this technology is limited by a number of factors, with the most common being the cost and availability of the technology but also the lack of information on material properties. This study focuses on investigating the material properties of PLA, PETG, HIPS, PA, ABS and ASA in order to elucidate their behavior in terms of wear and thermal resistance.

Interconnectivity between functional building blocks (such as neurons and synapses) represents a fundamental functionality for realizing neuromorphic systems. However, in the domain of neuromorphic photonics, synaptic interlinking and cascadability of spiking optical artificial neurons remains challenging and mostly unexplored in experiments. In this work, we report an optical synaptic link between optoelectronic spiking artificial neurons based upon resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs) that allows for cascadable spike propagation.

We consider an active nematic phase and use hydrodynamical equations of it to model the activity as an internal field. The interaction of this field with the nematic director in a confined geometry is included in the Hamiltonian of the system. Based on this model Hamiltonian and the standard field theoretical approach, the Casimir-like force induced between the boundaries of such a confined film is discussed.

Localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) can enhance the electromagnetic fields on metallic nanostructures upon light illumination, providing an approach for manipulating light-matter interactions at the sub-wavelength scale. However, currently, there is no thorough investigation of the physical mechanism in the dynamic formation of the strongly coupled LSPRs on sub-5 nm plasmonic cavities at the sub-picosecond scale. In this work, through femtosecond broadband transient absorption spectroscopy, we reveal the dynamic ultrastrong coupling processes in a nanoparticle-in-trench (NPiT) structure containing 2 nm gap cavities, and demonstrate a coherent motional coupling between vibrating AuNPs and the nanogaps.
