Published: December 2004

Studies of the thermodynamic properties of micellization, as well as the enthalpy change of adsorption (displacement), were conducted using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The cationic surfactants, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide, and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide or cetyltrimethylammonium bromide were used. Adsorption studies were performed utilizing HiSil 233 precipitated silica as the substrate. The thermodynamics of micellization were studied at 28, 30, and 35 degrees C using ITC. DeltaHdil was calculated and graphed versus concentration in order to determine DeltaHmic and critical micelle concentration. From these data, DeltaGmic and DeltaSmic were also determined and found to be in agreement with values previously determined using traditional temperature-variation methods. The thermodynamics of adsorption were also determined at the above temperatures using ITC. Using the results, the heat of displacement, Qdisp, and enthalpy of displacement, DeltaHdisp, were calculated. A plot of DeltaHdisp as a function of concentration was generated and used to interpret the mechanism of adsorption in the four regions of a typical cationic surfactant adsorption isotherm.

In an effort to mitigate or reverse the pathological progression of early-stage osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), this study employed a promising strategy that involves the sustained delivery of osteogenic factors to augment core decompression, facilitated by the use of composite hydrogels. Specifically, a hydrogel was synthesized by blending chitosan, Pluronic F-127, and tripolyphosphate, utilizing both ionic bonding and copolymer micelle cross-linking techniques. This hydrogel demonstrated exceptional biocompatibility, temperature responsiveness, pH-dependent biodegradation, and controlled release properties.

Thermoelectrochemical Method for Quantification of the Micellization Entropy of Redox-Active Polymers.

Redox-active micelles undergo reversible association and dissociation in response to their redox potential and are promising materials for various applications, such as drug delivery and bioimaging. Evaluation of the micellization entropy is critical in controlling the thermodynamics of micelle formation. However, conventional methods such as isothermal titration calorimetry and surface tensiometry require a long measurement time to observe changes in the heat flow or the surface tension caused by the micellization.

Amphiphilic copolymers are composed of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic chains, which can self-assemble into polymeric micelles in aqueous solution via the hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions. Due to their unique properties, polymeric micelles have been widely used as drug carriers. Poorly soluble drugs can be covalently attached to polymer chains or non-covalently incorporated in the micelles, with improved pharmacokinetic profiles and enhanced efficacy.

In the present study, the mixed micellization behavior of gemini surfactant-1, 5-bis (N-hexadecyl- N, N-dimethylammonium) pentane dibromide (G5) with non-ionic surfactant triton X-100 (TX-100) was investigated in the micellar phase by utilizing the conductometric technique. The deviation of ideal critical micelle concentration (cmc*) from experimental critical micelle concentration (cmc) has been estimated using well-known Clint's theory of mixed micelles. The regular solution approximation was used to determine the interaction parameter (β) and found to be negative.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how the surface properties and electrical conductivity of betaine-based ionic liquids change when mixed with different concentrations of gabapentin at a specific temperature.
  • The findings show that as gabapentin concentration and the length of the alkyl chain increase, surface tension decreases, indicating stronger interactions.
  • Additionally, micellization parameters improve with longer chains, while conductivity decreases at higher gabapentin concentrations due to increased viscosity and ion interactions.
