This tutorial review describes in a brief historical perspective the most important organic compounds that exhibit photochromism in the crystalline state since its discovery in 1867 up to now and considers in detail Schiff bases of salicylaldehyde with amines (anils). The latter comprise a chemical system undergoing hydrogen-atom tautomerism between enol and keto forms and show the phenomena of solid state photochromism and thermochromism. The system has been investigated extensively. Thus it has been shown that the photochromic property is a characteristic of the molecules but their chromobehaviour is influenced by the crystal structure of the compounds. Anils, apart from their fundamental interest, have potential for various applications.

Optically responsive materials are applied in sensing, actuators, and optical devices. One such class of material is dye-doped liquid crystal polymers that self-assemble into cholesteric mesophases that reflect visible light. We report here the synthesis and characterization of a family of linear and mildly crosslinked terpolymers prepared by the ROMP of norbornene-based monomers.

Information storage and encryption are the key technologies for modern information transmission. However, most optical information storage technologies based on long persistent luminescent (PersL) only have one fixed response mode, which is easy to imitate, limiting their security in advanced information storage and encryption applications. Besides, the cost of rare earth-doped PersL materials restricts their wide application.

Physical understanding and determination of different analytes without the need for advanced and additional equipment are highly important, which can be achieved by using stimuli-induced chromic materials. Physical and chemical incorporation of responsive chromophores into different polymers results in the fabrication of chromic polymers. Chromic electrospun nanofibers are prepared using the electrospinning technique, and their stimuli-responsivity is improved due to their high surface-to-volume ratio.

Smart wearable devices with dynamically reversible color displays are crucial for the next generation of smart textiles, and promising for bio-robots, adaptive camouflage, and visual health monitoring. The rapid advancement of technology brings out different categories that feature fundamentally different color-reversing mechanisms, including thermochromic, mechanochromic, electrochromic, and photochromic smart wearables. Although some reviews have showcased relevant developments from unique perspectives, reviews focusing on the advanced design of flexible chromic wearable devices within each category have not been reported.

Cyanostilbene (CS)-related conjugated groups can be considered as dual functional groups of AIEgen and mesogen to construct photoluminescent liquid crystals, and it is essential to study the relationship between their molecular structures and compound properties systematically. In this paper, we designed and synthesized linear and bent-shaped CS derivatives containing ester- and amide-connecting groups and different substituted numbers of alkoxy tails. Their phase behaviors and photophysical properties were investigated in depth.
