1. The effect of bilateral adrenalectomy on the sensitivity of blood vessels in rat airways to mediators that increase vascular permeability was examined. 2. An increase in vascular permeability was induced by intravenous platelet activating factor (PAF, 50, 100, 500, 1000 ng kg-1) and measured by quantifying the extravasation of Evans blue dye. 3. PAF consistently increased the amount of Evans blue extravasation in the larynx, trachea, main bronchi and intrapulmonary airways in sham-operated rats. 4. The magnitude of this extravasation was significantly greater in the larynx (P less than 0.05), trachea (P less than 0.05) and main bronchi (P less than 0.05) of the adrenalectomized rats than it was in these tissues of the sham-operated rats. 5. When adrenalectomized rats were given subcutaneous dexamethasone (0.2 mg kg-1 4 h before PAF) the amount of plasma extravasation produced by PAF was decreased to the level of the sham-operated rats. 6. We conclude that adrenalectomy potentiates the increase in airway vascular permeability induced by PAF in rats and that this effect may be due to the depletion of endogenous corticosteroids.

In patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), thrombolytic therapy and revascularization strategies allow complete recanalization of occluded epicardial coronary arteries. However, approximately 35% of patients still experience myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, which contributing to increased AMI mortality. Therefore, an accurate understanding of myocardial I/R injury is important for preventing and treating AMI.

Aims/hypothesis: Within the small intestine, neutrophils play an integral role in preventing bacterial infection. Upon interaction with bacteria or bacteria-derived antigens, neutrophils initiate a multi-staged response of which the terminal stage is NETosis, formation of protease-decorated nuclear DNA into extracellular traps. NETosis has a great propensity to elicit ocular damage and has been associated with diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema (DME) progression.

Background Photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) can be used to detect strong absorption from endogenous and exogenous contrast material, making it promising for detailed structural and functional imaging of hepatic sinusoids, including dynamic visualization of permeability. Purpose To evaluate whether PAM-based quantitative parameters of liver function and integrity (lacunarity, blood oxygen saturation [Sao], and Evans blue [EB] permeability) are associated with histopathologic indexes of fibrosis in a mouse model. Materials and Methods Between October 2022 and July 2023, a total of 35 male C57BL/6 mice were included in this study and received intraperitoneal injection of carbon tetrachloride to establish mouse models of progressive liver fibrosis, with seven mice in each group.

Background: The roles of the Pink1/Parkin pathway and mitophagy in lung injury during heat stroke remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of Pink1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy in acute lung injury (ALI) in rats with exertional heat stroke (EHS).
Methods: Sixty Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into control (CON), control + Parkin overexpression (CON + Parkin), EHS, and EHS + Parkin overexpression (EHS + Parkin) groups.

Drug delivery for epilepsy treatment faces enormous challenges, where the sole focus on enhancing the ability of drugs to penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB) through ligand modification is insufficient because of the absence of seizure-specific drug accumulation. In this study, an amphipathic drug carrier with a glucose transporter (GLUT)-targeting capability was synthesised by conjugating 2-deoxy-2-amino-D-glucose (2-DG) to the model carrier DSPE-PEG. A 2-DG-modified nano drug delivery system (NDDS) possessing robust stability and favourable biocompatibility was then fabricated using the nanoprecipitation method.
